Help us make it rightThree backyard fruit trees sparked what is to day a thriving gourmet food business for Rowena Fullinwider, founder and president of Rowena's, Inc., in Norfolk, Virginia. As word spread about the cake lady, requests for Rowena's specialty foods exceeded the capabilities of her kitchen. Rowena opened her gourmet manufacturing facility in May of 1983 and in 25 years, her facility has grown to 18...
I am the Director of The Virginia Tea Society. We held our September meeting along with a fabulous tea at Rowena's and it was beyond belief. I had spoken with Andrea, the pastry chef several times arranging the tea and she made sure Rowena's lived up to it's name. There was comforting music playing in the background, beautifully set tables with a vase of fresh flowers on each and a wonderful atmosphere. It was the best tea, in this area, that I have had the opportunity of attending. We were offered bottomless pots of loose teas: Earl Grey, Liz's Blend, Apricot and Raspberry along with three decaf's: English Breakfast, Green and Orange Spice along with milk or lemon slices and sugar cubes in a swan shaped container with tongs. We were also offered goblets of water with lemon and glasses of sparkling cider. There were five types of sandwiches - two halves of each, cherry tomatos, two scones served with lemon curd, Devonshire clotted cream and assorted jams, three slices of Rowena's's famous cakes, three slices of various melons, strawberries, kiwi's, grapes, and two hersey kisses. All of this was served on three tier trays...not one for each table but one three tier tray for each guest. It was just everything you expect at a Royal Tea and beyond. They even provided containers for take home delights. It was simply Marvelous!!! I recommend this Tea Room highly to everyone who reads this review. Thank you Rowena, Andrea and staff for a remarkable event! We will certainly be back soon! Aurora Livingston, Director, Virginia Tea Society, www.virginiateasociety.com
The Scene
Walking by the six-foot white rabbit, customers expect to enter a wonderland. No disappointments there: The front area is a gift shop with enough tea sets, jams, jellies,...
This is a Norfolk delicacy. You can buy the cakes in several locations. My favorite is the almond. If you really want a treat try it with lemon curd.
Definitely a Tidewater tradition, as mentioned above, but I'm not impressed. Dry cakes and cookies. I wouldn't pay for their desserts again.
This is not really a restaurant, but a retail shop of gift items with a room for tea parties. There are the cakes and curds, cookies, tea and a variety of non-food gift items. My favorite cake is still the almond pound cake with lemon curd. Her lemon curd is fabulous. But since I have been shopping for hostess gifts...
Good Lapsang Souchong (sp).
A Tidewater tradition.

Three prolific fruit trees in the backyard of this factory's founder compelled her to begin her career in gourmet food manufacturing. Visitors who tour the factory will see where Rowena's famous almond pound cakes, jams, and sauces are made and purchase these items in the gift shop.
A charming place to visit for afternoon tea or a light luncheon, Rowena's also has a gourmet gift shop, where you may purchase some of the luscious lemon curd you had with your scones. The basic tea service includes scones, jam, and lemon or raspberry curd, plus a pot of hot tea. Other services can include scones, cakes and other sweets, fruit, finger sandwiches, and crudités. There's even a...
Ladies dressed in their Sunday best are not unusual here. Don't forget your hat. (Think "Driving Miss Daisy.")
Most folks park across the street in the drug store parking lot.
Take time to tour the jam and jelly factory in the back of the store.
