Editorial reviews from the web (1)

Fresh seafood is the drawing card at this large wooden building, which wouldn't look out of place in a New England fishing village. Despite its out-of-town look, the restaurant has an authenticity sometimes hard to find in touristy towns. Locals come in for the fresh Virginia scallops, shrimp, fish, and other seafood. Steaks and lemon herb chicken are available for the non-Whalers. The...

The restaurant seemed dirty and empty. We ordered an unimpressive shrimp cocktail and a drink. Ordered a meal but was turned off by the appetizer so we asked for a check and left. Such a bummer!

Thanksgiving Dinner

I had reservations because I was nervous about Thanksgiving. They seemed prepared and had places for walk ins with a 15 minute wait. Dinner was great and I really appreciate the staff being there over Thanksgiving. Fresh seafood and one person in our party had the Thanksgiving Turkey. Finished with dessert. Well done!!!

We enjoyed a very nice turkey dinner here. One of the few restaurants open, which we appreciated because we were staying in a hotel. We did not have reservations and were seated within 10 minutes. The atmosphere was Cody and decorated for the holiday season. The staff was attentive and pleasurable and the food was excellent. Highly recommended for anytime...

I discovered this restaurant a few years ago and really enjoyed my meal then. My son and I were here this week and both had seafood pasta dishes, his with clams, mussels and shrimp, mine, with scallops and shrimp. Both were very good, and we shared a garden salad as well. We started with stuffed mushrooms... very cheesy and yummy....

Special Thanksgiving Dinner

This was a special Thanksgiving for us this year. We where meeting up with a long lost friend from years and years past. It is probably the first time we abandoned the eat at home Thanksgiving tradition. We didn't have much high expectation going out to eat, because we assumed every restaurant was gonna be busy and somehow service and...

Get on board at the Whaling Company! My spouse and I discovered some delicious seafood which was professionally served at one of Williamsburg's best seafood restaurants on a recent Saturday evening. The seafood here was fresh, well prepared and nicely plated. The fresh garden salads were excellent, as were the two hot soups that we ordered. The vegetables and potato...

We made a reservation for Thanksgiving and since traffic was light, we got there 15 minutes early, but the parking lot was packed. We walked in and were immediately seated and within just a few minutes they had taken our order. The service was impeccable, the food was wonderful and the servers were friendly. The place was huge and the...

Not impressed - the hot and spicy shrimp came in a stew seasoned with butter, paprika and black pepper, the flavors just didn't blend. The filet mignon was salty, the baked potato ok, and I was surprised - the huge chunk of broccoli was nicely cooked. My table was dirty, the waitress chatted endlessly with the …

What's wrong with the 70's?. We always go here when in the area. Food is not the best I've ever had but it's good enough to keep us coming back. Not much that we don't like here. Love their crab meat, crab cakes and shrimp. I don't know why people are complaining about the nautical theme - it's a seafood restaurant! And it is dark in there but some of us like the ambiance. The only complaint I...

A hidden gem.The sea food is fresh and cooked to order.A welcome and refreshing change from the fried seafood only run-of-the-mill places which saturate the area. The staff is extremley attentive, helpful and courteous. The freshly grilled trout was great, as was the sauteed flounder: light and moist. To top it all off, all deserts are home made!Do not pass on this morsel of a restaurant.

I want a restaurant within walking distance of my hotel. The staff highly recommended The Whaling Company. It was a two minute walk and I'm so glad I tried it. First, I had the best vodka martini I've had on a long ting time. Thank you bartender!

Fair service and food. I really like seafood and always looking for something new to try. This place was not to visually appealing on the inside, but wasn't there to look at decorations but rather eat. The service was fair and so was the food. Nothing to write home about but it was an alright meal. This seems to be a place that is more frequented by tourists instead of the locals.

Great food, in the 1970's.. The food is excellent and a great value.

Yelp

Upscale look with a relaxing atmosphere. A little pricey, but worth it for a special occasion. Great food, and friendly waitstaff.

Yelp

Food was good but not what I consider exceptional. My daughter and I split a big fried seafood combo. Portions were good but not excessively large. Service was good.

Yelp

Worst restaurant service wise I have been to in awhile. We have 3 kids and patrons and servers were obnoxious and rude - if you have kids skip it

Don't let the nautical theme throw you. Food was fantastic. Apps were great we had stuffed mushrooms and the crab dip. My wife and I both had filet mignon topped with crab Oscar. The steaks were cooked to perfection and the crab was in huge lumps. Dessert was great too. Service was very good and very friendly.

We went to eat supper there and the shades were down so that we could not see. Then when we received our orders, they served us raw steak.
