The U.S. Army Transportation Museum, at Fort Eustis, traces the history of army transportation by land, sea, and air, beginning with the Revolutionary War era. More than 90 vehicles, including experimental craft and numerous locomotives and trains dating to the 1800s, are on display. The museum's Korean War and World War II–era trucks can be toured inside and out. Be prepared to show a driver's...
Great museum for all ages. Toddler loves it, especially the full trains outside. Donations so no fee to get in.
Took my 2 year old son here he loved it. Didn't take a instructed tour. Went in side staff didn't exactly jump at helping but my son loved it and it was really cool.
Drastic improvement on the displays indoors since the late 90's. The static stuff outdoor is not so good need work but overall good history of Eustis and Army transportation. Why doesn't that...
Its free. That is always nice on a family trip. You will be inspected at the gate, it is a military base after all. They do a quick check of your car and then check you in and you are off to the museum, its a 5 minute process. The museum has an amazing collection of vehicles, trains, planes, helicopters,...
Great little museum located on Ft. Eustis. If your interested in the History of the Army Transportation this is the place to go. From the trains in the yard to the experimental vehicles this is a wonderful experience for all. You will see things you have never seen here. I enjoy it greatly and go at least once a year....
Great historical Army museum! The U.S. Army Transportation Museum artifact collection numbers just under 7,000 objects, plus another 1,000 exhibit props. The collection includes nearly 100 macro artifacts ranging from planes, helicopters, tugboats and landing craft to trucks, jeeps, hovercraft and trains.
When my wife and I decided to go to the Williamsburg area earlier this month, the Transportation Museum was not on our planned itinerary because we did not even know it existed. We only learned about it by seeing an ad in a combination map/ad for the Williamsburg area that we got at our hotel. As soon as we found...
See the various kind of transport vehicles used in the Army. Inside exhibit went through different era, Vietnam, Iraq, etc. Interesting enough display inside and outside to keep you occupied for a couple hours. Worth taking a detour along your trip to go visit.
The only downside is that it's on an Army base with no separate entry so you...
This was my second visit to the museum (I visited previously in May 2013 but did not have enough time to tour the outside exhibits). The outside is separated into four separate areas: Railyard, Ground Vehicle Park, Maritime Park, and Aviation Park; all are covered and fenced. There are paved walkways between the Ground, Maritime and Aviation Parks and the...
Much to our delight, a museum which we hadn't even thought would stand the test of time 20 years ago has not only survived the test of time but is in the process of metamorphosizing into a first rate experience. The museum's interiors and vehicles are stellar, covering a wide range of interests. The only negatives are they are not...
The museum was much bigger than I thought it would be. Very detailed, informative & interesting. Best part was that it was free! If you're interested in history & the army - you'll love it here.
They've got it covered - land, sea & air. Lots of static displays. The size of the place is good for taking the family without wearing anybody (very young or old) out. There is a lot to see, but it won't take the entire day. It would be better if they had a few pieces that could be toured -...
After a thorough security check to get on the base, the museum was easy to find. Inside and out, the museum details the role that logistics plays in supporting the troops in the field. Plan on spending 2-3 hours.
We had a few hours to wait for my brother after AIT graudation and this was the perfect way to spend the time. The museum was well done and all the exhibits outside were awesome to see.
Outstanding museum if you like military history. The museum is very well laid out and all associated are very knowledgeable. They recently sunk big $$ into some preservation and it's well received.
This museum shows the visitor a detailed view of the history of Army transportation, and inspires gratitude for the price paid by so many for our freedom. Give yourself at least 90 minutes to get a decent view of all that is offered.
We heard about this place while at our annual stay in Williamsburg. It was great! You actually on base a Fort Eustis; you have to go through base security which is extremely strict, but the soldiers were pleasant. There are very few visitors to this museum on a daily basis. The exhibits are spot on. The out door displays (covered)...
I went to this museum while I was aboard Ft Eustis for business. I only had about an hour to spare before they closed so I had to rush. I did not get the chance to view the large number of trains, aircraft, etc. that were on display outside. But the inside has a large selection of top-quality uniforms, vehicles,...
What an interesting trip through the history of Army transportation! And, to can't beat the low low price of free!
My wife and 5 year old daughter went with me and found it to be very interesting. My daughter's favorite part is being able to walk around all of the old vehicles and especially the trains that they have there. Not all of the vehicles are covered, so bring an umbrella if rain is in the forecast. My favorite part...
We had been here 30 years ago with our 4 YO son and it was good then but now it is terrific. We took our 4 YO grandson and he enjoyed the indoor displays,a great addition, and used up a ton of energy checking out the fabulous outdoor displays of aircraft, landing craft, and railroad cars. At the end we...
Very interesting for my little boy that loves planes trains and trucks! They have it all. History of army vehicles from horses to current day vehicles and covers vehicles used in every major war. FREE! There was a security check at the base entrance but you are entering an active army base. It was no problem and they didn't bother...
Lots to see there. My kid loved looking at all the equipment. I found it all very interesting too. Have I not yet hit one hundred characters yet?
The Transprotation Corps Museum at Ft Ft Eustis, VA is a great place to see some of the history of our nation through the development of military transportation. Kids can see unique projects like the Flying Saucer and barges that are huge.
Museum is located inside of Ft Eustis, so you have to go through security first. Once in, museum is close. It is never busy, and there is a lot to look at, from the perspective of military transportation. There is a small gift shop, no food.
A great place to walk among some of the most interesting pieces of Army equipment available anywhere. Trucks, trains, airplanes, helicopters and stories about how the Army Transportation Corps delivers the goods!
This is a good museum but I rated it poor because of the location. I tried to visit in January 2012 with my wife while we were on travel to that area. I had visited the museum about 10 years prior and found it a worthwhile stop. However, this time the security at the gate to Ft Eustis was much...
I really enjoyed seeing the history of military transportation vehicle. This is a great place to visit and very educational.
A relatively small museum filled with transportion items used throughout American military history. The best feature for kids is that they can climb on many trains and larger vehicles. The only negative is that the museum is located on an active military base and you may be required to get a pass to enter Fort Eustis.
Army transport museum is a great museum - Watch out - closed on Federal holidays!! Unbeleivable amount of materiel there - trucks and more trucks, jeeps, helicopters, future concepts, etc.
Free - great place for teenagers.
This is a wonderful museum to take the kids to and let them run around and just enjoy the day. Lots to look at and keep them busy. Great histroy.
If you have a child who loves big machinery, air crafts, etc. Or even yourself this place was awesome. Now it didnt say this in the description (it is located at Fort Eustis) and if you do not have a military ID, they do have you pull off to the side to search (minimal) your vehicle. You will need photo...
If you are a cicilian you will need your registration , insurance and license at the gate. This may take a few minutes especially if they ask you to step out of the car while they inspect it. The museum itself starts at the revolutionary war and makes its way to the last war giving specifics of the transportation used...
This is located on an active Army base - Ft. Eustis - you have do have to go thru a checkpoint where friendly, polite security staff ask you for your ID, registration, insurance card. Everyone has to get out of the car, and all doors, hood, trunk open. Quck, easy and you are on your way. I did read the...
My father was stationed here during the 60's so it was neat to see the history of transportation in the military.
If you like army museums, war stuff or big equipment, this is the place for it. The displays are a little dusty, the mannequins a little lost-looking in a few areas, but it is about equipment and you will see it all. Veterans of earlier wars like to see equipment they used constantly (my dad was really interested in it).
The inside portion of this museum is nicely done. I was impressed. They are out of room and will have to add on as their museum covers from beginning of our nation until now. They have many outdoor vehicles to look at and many brought back memories of my army days. The lady running the gift shop was well informed...
Definitely check this out if you are in the area, kids loved it. Trains, Planes, and also water travel.
Unique collection of military transportation artifacts, with a good historical overview. Worth seeing.
Not a large musuem, but it does have a covered pavillion with historic trains used for military operations. Also, a unique historical view of how military transportation has evolved. Another of the many good musuems in the area.
being from a military family i did enjoy visits from this museum i have made plans to go there with my brothers family this summer
I used to come to the transportation museum every couple years growing up. This is a must for any boy who is into GI Joe. No where else has the same large machinery and diversity from helicopters to hovercraft and trains.
They are currently expanding the museum to enclose 45,000 sqft. Not sure when it'll
This museum is located on Ft. Eustis and you do have to go through a security check point to get on base but it is worth it. The museum is FREE and it has quite a few exhibits indoors and out. Will visit again when in town.
I love the Ft Eustis transportation museum. They have a great selection of "big boy toys" for the kid in everyone. They've got something for every era, every taste, every size imaginable. Runs from the very beginning of the Transportation Corp through to Iraq & Afghanistan.
Having lived in Europe I honestly remember riding the DB trains, and I'm sure...
This was well worth the time. The kids went crazy.
The layout of the museum shows the history of the Army's transportation evolution.
very interesting museum. learned alot about transportation. Its nice to see them "polishing" it up.
This free museum is a great place for veterans! They've got lots of jeeps, trucks, guntrucks, boats, plane, helicopters, flying saucer, one-man jet pack, trains, etc. It's a great way to spend a few hours. Getting on base is a bit of pain, though. Make sure you have License, registration, and proof of insurance.
I was there in 1976 when stationed at Langley AFB, the Main Building was brand new and the Locomotives on display were well preserved and most had a fresh coat of paint. It was an enjoyable visit and took alot of photos. My daughter still remembers the "Flying Saucer"
At the Ft. Eustis guard station, we were politely asked to exit the car, leave all doors open and open the hood and trunk. I have no problem with that at all. My wife and I were asked for our driver’s licenses, car registration (again, no problem) and a car insurance card. (!) The only State Farm card I had...
We visited the museum on september 22nd. If you enter Fort Eustis and you have not an American Military ID you have to go to the right for the mandatory security check (ID and car). You have to take the first street on the left and return to access the museum.
The museum tells the history of military transportation with...
This FREE museum is located on Fort Eustis (an active military base). Be prepared to present ID documentation and submit to vehicle security check. Once through security the museum is easy to locate and well worth a visit. With a series of indoor dioramas and narratives and 4 outdoor pavilions the museum depicts the history and development of U.S. Army...
We were staying at the Great Wolf Lodge and looking for something to do on a beautiful day. This was a great choice. The indoor museum has many vignettes of life-size soldiers and vehicles, with detailed history of the design/creation of the vehicles, as well as history of the wars. The outdoor portion of the museum has cars/trucks/jeeps, boats and...
The only museum in the United States devoted entirely to the transportation sector of the military, and its history. A gift shop features a large variety of transportation memorabilia, ranging from transportation flags, to jewelry and novelty gift items.
This museum's six acres, situated inside the gates of Fort Eustis, will take you from early mule-drawn wagons to modern HUMMVs. The museum includes films, videos, dioramas, models, and a gift shop. Outdoor exhibits feature full-size vehicles and equipment.
This museum opened in 1959, and has since been dedicated to teaching the public about the evolution of American army vehicles from the colonial era to the present day. Pictures and camcorders are permitted on your visit. Stop by the gift shop on your way out, all proceeds go to help fund the museum.
