Cool decor, mediocre food and high prices

It seems that with the urban sprawl from NOVA and other places comes the snooty people. I have eaten here twice and both times found the menu to be lacking and the prices too high. This place is on par with most fast food places in terms of quality of food. It works for them because the city folk travel...

Were passing through Mineral (not hard to do) about lunch time and went looking for local spot. Found recommendation for Tavern on the Rail. IT is a little drive outside of Mineral but well worth it. Had Ruben and it was well toasted with plenty of sauerkraut. My wife had the Chicken with Bacon sandwich which she also enjoyed. Potato...

Great atmosphere, good eats and home made desserts to die for. Service was fast and friendly. They keep their menu limited each day so you have to go when they are serving your favorite dish.
You can spend time looking at all of the antiques and decor on the walls and book shelves.

We sat upstairs...limited menu due to a graduation in the County however enough variety and choices for all....prime rib was excellent....pork shank was excellent...good service...train wreck dessert is great and enough for two....again not a lot of bells and whistles...no pun intended....just a great meal and good service in a nice atmosphere

A hidden gem

What a surprise to find this charming restaurant, featuring a varied menu and full bar while travelling through the Virginia countryside. Located in an historic 19th century building hard by railroad tracks (a freight train came through, while we were there), the food was delicious and well presented and the service was attentive. We were there for lunch, but we...

We are at the age that it is not necessary to wait an hour for a Valentine's Day dinner, but it is still important to pick a very good restaurant. We arrived around noon and saw a large table of 10 or so men having a business lunch and another couple as well. The one waitress was busy but was...

If you want excellent food - not processed - then Tavern on the Rail is the place to go in Mineral. It may be tricky to find the first time, but it's worth the effort. The atmosphere, food and servers are wonderful. I have never had anything that I didn't like. Plus if you're blessed, a train will go by...

Everyone talks about Tim's and their seafood, but this is REAL seafood. Much less filler in their crab dishes. Tim's is great for sitting on a patio with friends overlooking the water and having a great time listening to live music. Tavern is great for a higher quality food in a nice atmosphere. The train even came by while we...

Restaurant is located about 45 mins north of Richmond, off the main roads in Fredericks Hall, Louisa County. Restaurant is relatively small, but has good food. Had the meatloaf special with pickled beets and a vegetable medley, which included squash, corn and onions. The meatloaf was tasty, but was slightly warm, served in a brown gravy. Pickled beets and vegetable...

This place was, for us at least, a little out of the way, but I'm glad we found it. The building itself was very old and interesting, with lots of things on the walls to look at. The service was excellent. Have a look at their menu on-line, but be aware that they have lots of specials, at least at...

A very nice restaurant for special occasions

Tavern on the Rail is really on the "rail". This elegant, but rustic restaurant on the tracks actually shakes when the train goes by. The cuisine is excellent - steaks, seafood, and local specialties. The staff cannot do enough to make guests comfortable and enhance their dining experience. Tavern on the Real is a real keeper - don't miss it!

We took our family reunion crowd from Lake Anna (14 persons) to a Friday Lunch at Tavern on the Rail. Other locals had recommended it as a bar/restaurant with excellent food. From the outside (and some on the inside) it presents itself as a bar/tavern, but ... it was far more than a neighborhood tavern. The food was excellent, with...

Tavern on The Rail has been one of those restaurants we love for "special occasions" in our family. The menu is terrific, the staff is very attentive, the rustic atmosphere is quaint - this means a wonderful experience for your taste buds and your eyes! "Tavern" is really a country jewel!

Unexpected elegance in Mineral

Quite an outstanding addition to the eating landscape in this part of the world, Tavern on the Rail offers excellent food in an elegant atmosphere. Seafood specialities are great and all meals come with more sides than you'd expect. Prices are reasonable for the quality and quantity. The bread basket with dinner was particularly yummy. In addition to the elegant...

we had dinner in the pub downstairs. Our waitress was uninterested and inattentive. I had the soup and BLT. The soup was store bought, Progresso-like. The BLT was good but the dinner rolls were burned. My brocolli was overcooked mush and the coleslaw was very liquidy. My husband liked the meat flavor in his burger but said it did not...

Overall the food is good. The salmon and prime rib was excellent. My shrimp and grits were good but had them just grill it instead of BBQ sauce. Why hid the flavor of shrimp? More than a "little out of the way" but this turned out to be a great find out in the Virginia countryside. Literally it sits next to train track that dates back to the Civil War. Only So So. Tavern on the Rail's main advantage is that there aren't any other "Fine Dining" choices nearby. The food is OK, but in no way great. In a more populated area it would be OK diner-quality food, but would not be able to compete with real Fine Dining category.

We had high expectations based on glowing reviews here and elsewhere.
Sadly, the restaurant did not come even close. The biggest problem was the food.

* The garlic mashed potatoes had a similar "off" taste.
