Help us make it rightCute memu. Food offered is from one end to the other. Salads, sandwiches, steaks, chicken, fish - all the bases are covered. Decent kids menu. Had reubin, country ham, fried chicken and shrimp at our table. Dessert was both apple and banana fitters topped with ice cream which were delicious! I'd recommend this place when your in the Williamsburg area.
What do you do after touring the countryside and starved to death? Well I turned to Yelp and found this little local joint with strong reviews, so why...
Hadn't been there in ages. Decided to ride the ferry over from Williamsburg on a beautiful fall, Sunday afternoon. Turns out the ferry ride was the best part of the trip. We both ordered the house special... The cup of peanut soup was okay, the half dollar sizes ham rolls were average; the apple fritter was greasy, and the peanut...
Taking the ferry from Jamestown to Surrey is a short pleasant ride. At the end of the rainbow is the Surrey House. Along w/ that you've jumped back about...
Myself and girlfriends travel through here a couple of times a year for a nearby retreat. We always make this our first meal of the long weekend.Nice friendly service.Delicious, well seasoned vegetables and tasty local meats and seafood.Suitable for solo diners, couples, families or groups.
Last time we ate here everything was tasty and reminded us of home cooking. The fried chicken is still the best and the collards tasty, but the hush puppies were inedible. They were either very old or the cook made a big mistake with the recipe. The peanut soup is still good but should have been warmer than room temperature....
This is a sweet little place in a sweet little town just south of the James River. The lady serving us was very friendly and efficient, and the food was very good. Top-notch sweet iced tea, peanut soup, and thinly sliced Virginia ham on fresh rolls. I highly recommend this spot for inexpensive and very tasty Southern food!
The ferry ride to the island from Jamestown was lots of fun. The food was good but not outstanding. Service was excellent and family friendly. The owner was very welcoming and made us feel very comfortable.
I've been here a half dozen times over a decade or more. I use to lave their peanut soup but not this time; it had overtones of vinegar. The collards seemed out if a can and heavily diced. I will not recommend but the wait staff were okay.
I called ahead to be verify that they were open for lunch and that there wasn't a dress code. While on the ferry, I ran into two families from Florida and recommended this restaurant from the online reviews. That will never happen again. When I arrived, I was told I couldn't park my motorcycle out front. So I moved it...
We just had lunch there today. I had 4 country ham sandwiches and fries. My husband had the special, fried chicken on a kaiser roll with onion rings. My 4 sandwiches were 1 inch squares. The ham was very tough and fatty. Fries had no taste and onion rings were ok. We went because the reviews were good. I wouldn't...
If you have the opportunity to eat here you will enjoy yourself. Southern cooking is the name of the game here, so forget about calorie watching for the day and enjoy yourself. The chicken fried steak and gravey are not to missed, and the side to order is the Apple Fritters,
It's a great place for out of town guests to get to know Virginia style cuisine! Peanut soup- ham bisquits- fresh fried chicken!
Nothing to write home about but, if you are in Surry and hungry, this place will be fine. They have a large assortment of sandwiches and a couple of soups. Food is OK but the experience is good. They have many 'rules' which we fund humorous and appreciated... like no yapping on your cell phone... go outside and... don't allow...
I visited the Surrey House restaurant for lunch with 22 friends while on a tour of Surry County, Virginia. We had reservations for 1:15, but arrived at 1:45. We were trying to catch the 3:30 ferry from Surry to Jamestown, and I was afraid we wouldn't make it in time. I was wrong. Everyone ordered off the menu, selecting items...
I took my elderly mother on the Jamestown-Scotland Ferry when she was visiting and then over for lunch at the Surrey House. They have the most fabulous she-crab soup!!!
If you have never had she-crab soup before make sure you take them up on their offer to taste before you order.
Their soup is very rich and a it spicy,...
My wife and I stopped for lunch before touring historic homes. The staff were very friendly and attentive. My wife had reuben sandwich and I had a club. We shared a cup of peabut soup Both of the sandwiches were very tasty but the soup was the star of the meal The fires were coated and were outstanding. Would definitely...
My husband and stopped into check into our room at Surry House before heading over to Chippokes Plantation State Park. The owner gave us a genuine welcome and directions to the park. We came back to dinner. My husband had a ham and cheese sandwich with fries that looked delicious and I had a GENEROUS golden brown helping of popcorn...
Four of us ate there today after taking the Jamestown Ferry across the river, arriving about 1:30 p.m. We were seated immediately, and our server was Pat, who has waited on us many times. The restaurant was clean and gives a rustic atmosphere, which we like. The she-crab soup was to die for - as always. Our sandwiches (grilled cheese...
Friends took us to Surrey House Restaurant for lunch and a great treat it was. All four of us had the perfectly wonderful she crab soup. Two sandwiches and and a plate of shrimp rounded out the choices - with fries and onion rings for sides. Oh, and one beer.
The sandwich eaters gleefully reported that they had good food,...
Took the ferry from Jamestown across to Surry and stumbled upon this restaurant for lunch. There isn't much else in the area so we decided to give it a try...
My wife and I have been wanting to try this restaraunt since we moved to Prince George. We drove the thirty minutes to the restaraunt expecting a nice meal....WRONG! We walked in and the restaraunt smelled musty, but we were seated. My wife ordered a crabcake sandwich and I had the special (Fried Oysters). Her crabcake sandwich was horrible...a little...
While our family has dined at this establishment multipe times over the years (mostly when Ms. Gwaltney owned and operated), our most recent trip will be our last. After the restaurant was bought by current owners (who are looking to sell as we hear), the food and service DEFINITELY went straight down the toilet. My kids were very excited to...
The Surry House Restaurant is a nice little small town eatery. It shows its age a bit but the family owned, country atmosphere more than makes up for any minor physical deficiencies. The hostess greeted us at the door, our drink request was filled promptly and our order was taken. A bowl of outstanding she crab soup was served immediately....
I had read a review recommending lunch at the Surrey House, and had to try it. The restaurant has been owned by the same family for many years. The food was delicious, but the real attraction was the friendliness of the owner. We were able to sample the peanut soup, which we decided was not what we wanted, although it...
We couldn't find parking for dinner in Williamsburg so we took the free ferry across the James River to Surry and were very pleased to have an amazing home style hot chicken dinner at Surry House. The restaurant was clean, service friendly, and the food was Southern Style like my family in South Georgia makes it: Golden brown, light, and...
On the way to tour Bacon's Castle and then across the river to Williamsburg, my wife and I decided to stop at Surry House for lunch. As usual, the waitstaff was very friendly and helpful. They have great Virginia Ham and peanut pie. If you like fresh bay crabs-then try the crabcakes. If you are looking for good old fashioned...
Great place to eat. Casual atmostphere. Very friendly and attentive staff. I had the fried seafood platter. Reasonable wait time for food. It was hot and delicious. Great price. Too full to have dessert but I was tempted. Limited parking was the only weak point so car pool with friends and family and give this place a try.
Stopped in to Surry House for lunch with my 8 year old daughter. We split a bowl of their she crab soup and split a club sandwich with fries. The waitress encouraged us to taste the soup before ordering because it is sweeter than most people make it. We very much enjoyed the rich flavor with a hint of sherry....
I have eaten here numerous times since I started visiting Williamsburg in the later 80's. The atmosphere is homely and the food is very good. It's nice taking the kids on the ferry to get there too.
I have been to the Surrey House several times over the last 20 years and it has really declined. First off, the restaurant had an old moldy smell that turned my stomach. Then my family of five was seated in a tiny booth but that didn't matter because I was looking forward to their ham rolls. I ordered a special...
We really enjoy taking the free car ferry across the James while visiting Williamsburg. The Surrey House for lunch makes a very enjoyable afternoon. The She-Crab soup is to die for as is the peanut soup. Hard decision.... Be sure to get Va. ham. I like the ham biscuits. Save room for peanut pie or chess pie. You won't regret...
I don't know who hated this resturant. The food was great- service was excellant. We ordered a club sandwich and reuben with onion rings. If I lived here I would eat here alot.
Very good food at a nice price and good people serving it to you. I I have newly experienced peanut soup and peanut pie - VERY tasty! :) If you're crossing over the ferry into Surrey with a hunger, this is the place to be. :)
We stopped by on our way home from the river, it was close to closing time so I was apprehensive that the food may not be hot and fresh but was presently surprised. I had the Salisbury steak and the wife had the pork chops ... both were excellent. the sides were good except for the green beans ... not...
Since we were going to use the Ferry to Jamestown I looked for a Restaurant close by and " discovered" the Surrey House.advertised on the Internet. Even though most of the recent ratings were rather negative we decided to give it a try. This was a big mistake because we ended up with the worst lunch we ever had ....
We ate here in March with a friend visiting from Spain. We wanted to show him so real southern food. We had the peanut soup and it was good but everything else we ordered was just ok..... The ferry was the best part of this day for us.
Yuck. While the gravy tasted real, the instant mashed potatoes were just that and that is ridiculous and a turnoff. The other food for my party of 5 was average fare. She crab soup and the hush puppies were the only standouts. They did serve me my instant mashed side quickly and efficiently. Is that a good thing? lol. The...
First of all I would like to say I don't understand why there are some bad reviews. I live in Hampton and go to the Surrey House periodically. I have never had a bad experience. Everyone in there is always so friendly and the food is great! I especially like the she crab soup...it has a unique flavor and I...
True southern Food, Very Yummmy & A nice ferry ride to get to you, & the cotton fields in bloom was a pretty to look at on our way to the surry house, i would definitly go back, great hush puppies TOO !! & Raisin house special pie ( kinda like Pecan) So GOOD.
- very disappointing. We intentionally came to Surry looking for Peanut soup, we found and enjoyed it at The Surry House. The rest of the meal was terrible. My wife ordered a ham steak and a house salad. She was told that the steak would be very salty. It was indeed, a very thin slice of very dry extremely salty...
Visiting Williamsburg always calls for a ride on the Jamestown-Scotland Ferry over to Surrey. This has become a tradition on our trips. We visit Smithfield and then have supper at the Surrey House Restaurant. My favorite is the Ham biscuits with fries or onion rings. They usually have a special that includes their Peanut Soup. This is a very rich...
We stopped for lunch on the way home from a weekend trip to Williamsburg. We waited 15 minutes to be seated; yet there were 6 empty tables that we could see. The owner came by and said they had to set up a table; and we watched them do that; but we were then seated at a completely different table...
We stopped for lunch while exploring Surry Co, My wife and I shared 4 tasty small ham rolls (made with yeast dough), french fries and great peanut soup. This light lunch came to about $12. A very tasty, inexpensive, southern lunch.
After a failed trip to a nearby establishment that was closed, we stopped in at the Surrey House for a late lunch. Wanting something different I ordered a cup of the peanut soup. My dad is a big fan…
Ate breakfast there today. The service was slow, the coffee was weak and I asked that it be taken back. The order was wrong, but we were in a hurry so I let that one go. This is the third time in four visits with the same results. I will not be back.
We have known about this place for years and pass by it on the way to NC beaches during the summer. So this year, we finally stopped for dinner. We were there on a sunday evening and they were not busy.
Our food choices were Salisbury steak, and fried butterfly shrimp, both with 2 sides. It took a while to...
This is our favorite place to take the family for a Sunday drive. The food is great for both our tastes and our children. We prefer the fried chicken or any of the seafood dishes. Our two boys (4 & 6) like the cheeseburgers, chicken fingers or the peanut butter & banana sandwiches. They especially like the hot fudge brownie topped with ice cream at the end of the meal! The service is...
Love eating here. Very, very good food!
This is our favorite destination to take family and friends. Great southern style food, generous portions, prices are so reasonable. Located in the small town of Surry, Virginia it's a great ferry ride from Williamsburg. Wonderful views on the James River. Doesn't cost a penny cause the ride is free. You arrive to the restaurant and after being greeted you and waited on and served with...
Great little restaurant. It's the kind that is away from the tourists area with high prices and lack of charm. First you drive your car on a large ferry boat and take a 15 minute thats totally free. You're...
Our favorite Sunday restaurant. They serve a Granny Sunday Special which is delicious! Baked Chicken with a bit of country ham, stuffing, corn pudding and green beans. A Sunday tradition for our family. Our kids stick to the chicken fingers and their Surry House hot dogs. Prices are great!
Have a family of 8. Went to Surrey House for Mother's Day. Most of us had their "Sunday Special" which was..... tender baked chicken, Edwards Country Ham, Cornbread Stuffing, corn puddin, & green beans. ...

i called ahead to make reservationa and mentioned to the person taking my reservation that it was our wedding anniversary. They seated us alone in a part of the dining area that was not being used. The food was great, the service great, and the prices were low. A perfect dining experience.
After a day at Historic Jamestowne and Jamestown Settlement, we took the ferry across the James River and went to the Surrey House Restaurant. It was good! We felt like we were experiencing a Virginia meal without the historic area price-tag. We had rolls, chicken, ham, peanut soup, stewed tomatoes, peanut pie (like a pecan pie with peanuts-yum!). One of...
This is our third stop at Surrey House since it reopened under new management a couple of years ago. As the mid-February day exceeded 70 degrees, we were motorcycling. If you go, try the peanut soup, a delicious Virginia original. Although the restaurant was busy, service was prompt and the food was traditionally delicious.
I dined at this charming little restaurant while visiting Williamsburg...
My family ate at The Surrey House while in Williamsburg. I highly recommend it. This cozy little restaurant is in the town of Surry. Not only was the food delicious, it arrived fresh from the kitchen, with...
Delicious hometown restaurant. Charming atmosphere, great southern food, generous portions of everything and prices are MORE than reasonable. If you're in the Jamestown, Williamsburg, Tidewater region (we were staying at a timeshare in Williamsburg), it's well worth the trip to this lovely little restaurant. YUM.
I wish there were more of these places in the country. My family and I loved everything, food and atmosphere. We had been in the car for a while and knew this place was on the way and we finally got to stop. I got the ribs, thank God I didn't get the full rack, the half was more than I could handle. They were the best I've ever had, and I've had quite a bit in my day, with green beans and...
While in Williamsburg, we took the free ferry ride from Jamestown to Surry & ate at the Surrey House Restaurant. It did not disappoint! The novelty of taking the 15 minute ferry ride was an enjoyable view of the James River. The restaurant is charming & prices so reasonable . They from 3.99 (sandwich) to highest (entree) of $18.99 (ribeye served with a crabcake). Entrees include a house...

My family visited Williamsburg. While there, we traveled across the ferry at Jamestown over to Surry, Virginia. What a delight it was. The ferry ride is free, you go in your car, and it takes about 15 minutes to travel across the river.
We drove about 3 or 4 miles into the town of Surry, through their one stoplight and found the Surrey House. A lovely little country restaurant with home cooked...
If you want great home cooked food at great prices, you'll love The Surrey House. It is far from being the standard "tourist trap" that you can visit in the Williamsburg area.
Head toward's Jamestown and you'll go straight to the Jamestown Ferry. The boats hold anywhere from 40 to 65 cars. They run every 30 minutes and the trip...
We visited Surrey House on May 29, 2008. We have driven by many times on our way through Surrey and always commented that we should try it. Now we wish we had gone years ago.
We were greeted with a warm welcome and smile. The decor is simple but nice. We were given help getting our two small children settled...
Really good food at a very reasonable price. I went here on a recommendation and was really glad I did. Its definitely away from any tourist areas and the people who went here all seemed local. If I am ever back in the area I will definitely go back to the Surrey House.
