Editorial reviews from the web (3)

Middleton Tavern presents local and regional acoustic musicians nightly at its Oyster Bar lounge. The Oyster Shooter—raw oysters served in a shot glass with vodka and cocktail sauce and washed down with beer—supposedly originated here. The upstairs piano bar is open on Friday and Saturday nights.

Horatio Middleton began operating this "inn for seafaring men" in 1750, and Washington, Jefferson, and Franklin were among his guests. Today four fireplaces, wood floors, paneled walls, and a Colonial theme create a cozy atmosphere and seafood tops the menu; the Maryland crab soup and pan-seared rockfish are standouts. Try the tavern's own Middleton Oyster Ale, perhaps during happy hour or on...

Established in 1750 as an inn for seafaring men, this restaurant also drew the likes of Washington, Jefferson, and Franklin. Restored and expanded, the City Dock landmark offers many seafood entrees, as well as steaks and chateaubriand for two. It's a nice mix of historic location and good food. At lunch, the menu includes pasta, fajitas, and sandwiches. A drink on the tavern's front porch is a...

The menu seemed to have quite a bit that looked delicious! We were promptly seated...it was mid-week so not very busy. Ordered the Seafood Tower for Two as it had a variety of appetizers. Mediocre. The calamari was indeed good, however the Clams Casino had a lot of oil in it....not appetizing. 2 sea scallops and 2 shrimp...they were good....

The four of us heard how nice this restaurant was and it did not disappoint us in the least. All meals were great! I had the veal; absolutely the best I have ever had prepared for me. Well done; congratulations. When I am back in Annapolis, I will make it a point to dine here again. Also, the building was...

Whether outside on the porch, in summer or seated by the fire in the winter ..... the menu offers something for every taste - good, reliable American cuisine with energetic service! Maybe not the most appropriate place for young children.

Loved Their Crab Cakes

Stopped for lunch on a Sunday afternoon. We both decided to have their Crab Cake Sandwich. So glad we did. Very delicious, full of lumps of crab, no fillers, and not a lot of spices. Very nice restaurant inside, great wait staff and we were served very quickly. Will be happy to return here on my next visit to Annapolis.

The waitresses are friendly and have a good knowledge of their menu. They can recommend some of their best dishes.
They don't have the creme of crab soup on their menu but they have it usually as the soup of the day, so definitely check before you go if you are looking to have some good crab soup.

In the waterfront part of Annapolis, very convenient if you're walking around the city. Food was okay, nothing special. We had oysters as an appetizer and main course salads. Service was too slow with the initial drinks and too fast with the food (which came before the drinks). Atmosphere typical pub.

The Crab Cakes were outstanding! Also try the Crab Dip and the Crab Napoleon appetizers, they are crazy delicious. The Penne Ala Vodka gets the nod as well. The Long Island Iced Tea is a great drink as well as the Middleton's Oyster Ale. As for service, Sarah was amazing.

We waited to eat on the porch. It was a busy, beautiful Saturday, so it was well worth the wait. Crab napoleon was good, and the lobster bomb sandwiches (a special) were also very good. We would definitely go back.

Seated for lunch outside. Server very friendly. Food was good. One negative was the restaurant was using an older big white bucket which was filled with water and ice to fill the water pitchers. The bucket was on the ground outside right next to the main entrance. A few feet away was a dog dish on the sidewalk for pets....

The food is the secondary reason for going to Middleton Tavern- the historical significance is breathtaking. The food is goos, seafood is fantastic. The bar on the first level is wonderful- if you can get a seat. Also, if you are dining there during the winter- reserve a table by the fireplace.

This is sort of a superior pub. My wife and I stopped in for quick bite to eat this afternoon, and, Annapolis being the Blue Crab capital of the known universe, not surprisingly each of us had a crab cake sandwich. Loved the historical aspect, but the food was bland at best (and we sampled many items), even the oysters didn't receive a proper shucking, though when the check came, I felt I received a proper "rhymes with shucking"!! This is a reliable staple for Annapolis visitors. It's right on the dock and it's been around for ages. I always bring visitors here. The service is usually good, and although the food is nothing special, it's pretty good. I noticed the smoked bluefish on the appetizer menu, and really enjoyed it. I rarely see that on restaurant menus.

I believe the menu states that this restaurant was established in 1968, and you can tell.

Go for the History. This place was established in 1750. One of the oldest restaurants in the US. Thats what makes the place a must go. The food is very sub par and overpriced. Our server was rushing us along the entire night. Happy with the experience because of the historical aspect, but would not return otherwise.

Horrible lunch service. I waited 15 minutes and other than a glass of water, nobody waited on me. I walked out and had lunch at Dock Street Grill where I received excellent service and food.

Cheryl at the bar is wonderful!

We started with a group of 7 and were put right by the front door, no good! Food was just ok, nothing special. Ordered steak med rare and it came med well. I wil say the desserts were great!

I had steamed mussels. They were amazing. The bartender is a sweet guy. Great place to go for bar food and drinks. I'm sure they're dinner food is amazing also. It's quick and easy. I would go. PS. Super cheap also.

Don't go for the food. This is a place to drink they have live music but obstructed vision. This is basically a bar/restaurant for tourists.

The best mussels in Annapolis. The Bloody Mary recipe is excellent and comes from the owner. I have never had a bad meal here but the entree portions are small and pricey, otherwise my food rating would be 3. The bartenders are more amicable than the servers and I always prefer to eat in the pub area.
