The lights are dim and the sushi chefs are laid-back at this combo restaurant and karaoke bar. Healthy portions of fresh sashimi and sushi are hand-rolled within minutes of ordering. Spicy tuna, crab and eel are some of the more delectable options and are served with generous amounts of ginger and wasabi. Diners can also choose from a selection of salads and rice entrees. On most nights, you...

At this P Street bar you’ll find a chill lounge area downstairs--complete with a 1,200-gallon fish tank--and a karaoke bar on the second floor, which gets especially rowdy on the weekends. A funky...

This place is a hoot. The upstairs is a karaoke bar, where locals and tourists seem to be competing for most humorous performance. The downstairs is a respectable restaurant, serving sushi and Japanese fusion dishes. Beyond the restaurant is a club, featuring live jazz on Wednesdays and loud DJ music otherwise. Take your pick.

Horrible service, overpriced, rude staff, trashy atmosphere and bad food

We had a groupon here and the staff seemed annoyed that we bought It. They said we couldn't use our groupon toward happy hour which was fine but then we wanted to get the happy hour menu on food bought over the cost of our groupon and they refused charging us full price though they were not clear about it...

Shockingly terrible atmosphere and service

I don't know how this restaurant manages to secure it's location in Dupont but the filthy interior is enough to ruin your appetite - dirty mildewed rugs and old tables made me think I was eating at a diner off of a midwestern interstate. The drinks are served in plastic glasses and the sushi wasn't tasty. I recommend avoiding this...

We were excited to discover this restaurant as we walked around. The sushi was great. We ate in a very creatively designed room that felt like an underwater cave. We liked the contemporary music selections as well.

Later that evening... boisterous crowded, sushi karaoke

Had seats at the sushi bar and marveled at all the 20,30 somthings reveling in a community sing karaoke. Small place 10-15 tables; hundred or so folks all seeming to have a good time.
Was about 11pm when we arrived and took the last two chairs at the sushi bar.
Found Japone by Groupon. 4 rolls, large Sapporo, sake $50...

Not Thrilled

I've had the food a couple of times. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't anything memorable. Possibly even more disappointing was that their beer selection sucks. I'm not rude in reviews, and I like to give support where it's due, but yeah. When Sapporo is the best you have for beer, you need to rethink your libations.
The karaoke is...

Actively mean and condescending to customers...don't use your Groupon there: not worth being treated like dirt

Average Rating

Rude, Horrid Service - discriminatory against Groupon users.
Our bill had a service fee attached to it. The hostess came and explained at length that some Groupon users only tipped 5% and that's why they added the tip on. She physically pointed at the bill and said the amount was 20%. She was mean, condescending, and rude. It was implied...

Sounds like a joke, but unfortunately it is not...a cockroach crawled out of my dinner at this restaurant. Although our server did apologize, we were still charged for our meal. This is unbelievably poor customer service and the roach in my rice is absolutely disgusting!

I "dined" at this place tonight and I have to say that it was the most disguising restaurant I have been at in many years. First, I was at the sushi bar on the second floor and the carpet and general areas were really dirty. Second, both of the sushi guys were sick and sneezing all over the place. Finally, to top things off they had a friend hanging around joking about how sick they were....

I have been to Cafe Japone more than a few times with various friends and most recently my fiance who is from the UK. The past experiences were very positive but I must say that the last time I went which was Saturday April 3rd I was not happy as I paid my bill, which was well over a $100. We did not order food because we just wanted to enjoy karaoke so we bought drinks. A lady who was NOT our...

Ate at the cafe upstairs, used to be great. Over a decade ago.
Still decent fish, but ordered a chirashi, and my "mock" crab mocked me by still including the plastic wrapper. So... an edo sushi experience where you are chewing on a strip of plastic. Yuck.
Absolutely indifferent service, seated by a window that didn't close, o'cha a glass...

We just happened on this place because it was close to our hotel. We did not have sushi. My husband had Kobe beef tartar and it was delicious. He had another appetizer that was OK. I had the lamb chops (not exactly Japanese), and they were quite good, came with rice and vegetable and nice sauce on the meat. Folks...

My cousins took me to Cafe Japone for my last weekend as a single woman. The menu was health and vegetarian friendly. The food, drinks and wine were good. We all stood in front of the mic singing and dancing like we were at the Grammy's instead of amateurs in front of a karaoke machine. It was obvious that the waitress was annoyed throughout our dining experience. However, she was prompt with...

It was my birthday and I had a group about 15. The service wasn't good, food took sooo long, and I didn't even get a treat, yet the girl at the other table did, with a bright candle on top of her cupcake! This restaurant has a good sushi bar and would you believe it even has karaoke. With thousands of songs to choose from, you can't help but find a favorite to sing. The crowd here is yuppyish and some area students hang about. The atmosphere is friendly, which is good if you sing off key, like me.
