The Wells Reserve at Laudholm is a National Estuarine Research Reserve with its headquarters listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Wells Reserve staff and volunteers expand knowledge about coasts and estuaries, engage people in environmental learning, and involve communities in conserving natural resources. Their work is supported by members of the nonprofit Laudholm Trust.

Flat, easy walk through forests and across open areas with lookouts and rest spots at various places along the salt marsh and estuary. Trees marked with information as well as signs at the lookouts explaining various things in the environment and ecosystems. Nice, peaceful, pretty walk. We walked 5 of the 8 trails in about 2 hours.
This is a very well maintained preserve with excellent educational value. Make sure you take time to explore the visitor's center - the exhibits are well laid out and informative. Pick up a map and explore the many miles of trails.

We always enjoy the well maintained walks to the wet lands overlooks and to the Drake's Island beach (best at low tide). You might expect seeing school children on a field trip and one time a bus load of photographers on a photo tour of Maine.

Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve encompasses the Laudholm Farm in its 1,600-acre reach. Also a bird sanctuary, the area was chosen because of two rivers adjacent to the farm that flow into the ocean forming estuaries and nesting areas. Visitors can spend the day watching the bird species, walking through the trails and visiting the restored buildings and displays on the property.
