Terrible experience

My husband and I hired VCCM to repair parts of our home following termite damage and to complete some other work unrelated to the termites. John B. Werner Sr., who is the owner of VCCM, is the least professional individual I have ever encountered. I’ve never written a negative review on a company before, but I wanted to warn others about what they would be getting by hiring John Werner and VCCM.

After the work on our house began in November 2020, John became increasingly rude with my husband and me. He yelled at my husband over the phone on several occasions and generally responded with angry and hostile outbursts every time we asked a question about the work. He was particularly nasty with me and even told me at one point that I can’t read words off a paper. We know this behavior isn’t specific to us - even his contractors say he is an angry and rude person.

John also does not supervise his contractors’ work. Some areas of work were sloppy, but John would repeatedly argue with us when we would go to him about the poor work. Eventually, John stopped by our house to see for himself. After doing so, he told his workers to redo certain things (mostly areas of drywall finishing). But getting to that point was exhausting.

Along these lines, John also charged us nearly $1,000 for work his team did on our gas fireplace. Their work resulted in the fireplace being out of code, and now no gas companies will connect a gas tank to our fireplace because of the code violations. We would have to remove all the marble plating surrounding the fireplace to fix it. Despite two different gas companies telling us the fireplace is now out of code because John’s team cut the metal sheeting, John has refused to admit the error. Because my husband and I just wanted to stop working with John as soon as possible, we offered to have John’s team install an electric log unit in place of the prior gas one. John did this - and then still tried to charge us nearly $1,200 for the fireplace work. When I asked for a breakdown of this charge, John became very frustrated and repeatedly refused to provide a breakdown. He eventually dropped the price a couple hundred dollars, but still refused to provide a breakdown of costs. John charged us nearly $1,000 for work on a fireplace that is no longer functional. At the end of it all, we wound up just giving in because we didn’t want to have to work with John anymore.

Finally, one of John’s workers repeatedly told racist “jokes” to our Black workers (who were there working on other parts of the house and do not work with John or VCCM). These workers became so uncomfortable that they finally came forward and told us what had been going on when we weren’t around. We tried telling John and his contractor about this, but they both ignored us.

When I tried giving John feedback on each of the above points over text, he ignored me and just sent me his banking information for payment.

Please do yourself a favor - do not hire VCCM or John Werner.
