In its short life, the Vintage Kitchen has racked up many accolades for its focus on local foods, artisan cheeses, and microbrews. Chef Phillip Craig Thomason is Paris trained, but local, and knows the specialties of the area. It's a place where you can order "Five Spice Duck Breast" and also a superb cheeseburger. All the spices and sauces come from an outdoor herb garden. A special...

Todd Jurich had a monopoly on fine downtown dining until French-trained chef Phillip Craig Thomason, a Portsmouth native, opened this restaurant on the ground level of Dominion Tower, a skyscraper office building between Waterside Drive and the Elizabeth River. His is the only really good downtown restaurant with a river view, which almost alone makes it a fine choice. Like his teachers in...

We didn't know how / what door to come into. We called and the first person said come threw the door. We asked the front doors of the building? She said she was not sure the would get a manager. Were told come to the garage and take elevator.

This was a true disappointment from start to finish.

This was a very disappointing experience. The food was really not as described (brisket tasted like pot roast), very salty, common looking dishes; Caesar salad was a chopped iceberg lettuce concoction. Dessert was decent. Grossly overpriced wine list.

For Restaurant week I would have thought the menu would be the best the chef could offer. The salad tasted like it had been put together earlier. Lettuce limp. Sweet potato fries heavy on the salt. The 3 of us did't care for the dessert. It would have been nice to have a waitress that could smile rather than feel like we were just one more table to serve. Very little sauce on the ganache

We came for dinner during Restaurant Week so the menu was offering only a few choices. The pumpkin soup was presented beautifully and really delicious. There was a nice cocktail and wine selection. The pork was cooked beautifully and the crab was perfect. The dishes were creative without being hard to decipher. The service was spot-on. The only drawback is that the restaurant is very dark. The...

Business description (4)

The diners at this local cafe and bistro can choose to enjoy views of Elizabeth River while dining. The menu here features dishes like Chesapeake Bay flounder, wild mushroom streudel and baked-to-order caramel apple tart a la mode.

Although Chef Phillip Craig Thomason has traveled to numerous places as a consultant and executive chef, he began the Vintage Kitchen in his hometown. His work and dedication is obvious to those that patronize the Vintage Kitchen due to it's exquisite quality in regards to freshness and flavor and the decor is absolutely breathtaking with unbeatable sweeping views of the river. Many...
