Robert E. Lee, who became the commander of the Confederate Army, was born in the Great House of Stratford Hall Plantation, one of the country's finest examples of Colonial architecture. Eight chimneys in two squares top the H-shaped brick home, built in the 1730s by one of Lee's grandfathers, Colonial governor Thomas Lee. The house contains Robert E. Lee's crib, original family pieces, and...

During our stay at Harbor View Campground in Colonial Beach, we visited Stratford Hall. Here is a piece of history in the process of restoration.
You can walk the grounds and see beautiful architecture still standing after 200 years. The self-guided tour gave very interesting insight as to how the Plantation operated and survived through the years. Using an ipod...

It was a nice visit with pleasant staff. There were nature trails, and quiet country setting. The history is brought to life by the views and tour. Also be sure to go thru the...

We learned so many things. We also walked the grounds, there are some lovely garden spots, also walked around the buildings. Then a short...

My hubby is the library history buff so off we went. (Visual works better for me.) This home is 275 years old (the birthplace of Robert E. Lee) and still has original floors, etc. Approx. 45 minute tour and then are free to roam the grounds. Interesting!
