Somerset Place

Drive about an hour inland to see one of North Carolina's best preserved historic plantations, 52 miles west of Nags Head on Highway 64. Somerset Place once sat on 100,000 acres of land that bordered Lake Phelps and was one of the largest plantations in the state, producing rice, corn, oats, peas, beans, and flax. Its sophisticated sawmills handled thosands of feet of lumber from 1785 to 1865....
