I agree with the review posted 4-17-2009. Nothing has improved over the years. Mechanical service is good but the customer service and attitude of the owner Mr. Smith is horrible. He blames the customers for defective parts that he installs and makes a scene in front of his employees and customers as well. My mother was recently there for a dead battery and Mr. Smith came out of his office screaming at her for not keeping the battery charged by driving the car more often. As a newcomer to Richmond in the mid 80s a friend recommended Smith Auto Service as one of the best auto mechanic shops in the area. My friend sold used autos for a franchised auto dealer and frequently, before buying a car, his clients would insist that the vehicle be checked out by Smith Auto. This place makes you feel like they are doing you a favor and because of the economy (people are keeping cars longer) they have build their clientel and don't treat customers with the level of respect that they deserve when it comes to spending their money for a service at this place. A staff member was having a bad day and because I simply asked what time did she think my car would be ready (a normal question) she got very smart with me and told me about how many other customers' vehicles they have and she couldn't give me no glue of time.
