Made the 45 mile drive from VA Beach today only to find the museum closed. There were open signs all over the grass but the place was locked up tight. We got a private tour (as we were the only ones there) which was wonderful. The curator was very knowledgeable and tailored the tour to our interests. The little details make this tour worthwhile.

This avant-garde Greek Revival house gets its name from its size and it contains 21 rooms, 16 fireplaces, and four floors. The house was a Union hospital during the Civil War and signatures and notes from the wounded soldiers are still on the walls of the house. The house also features constant and changing art and historical exhibits.
