The Virginia Historical Society was founded in 1831. Like most of the nation's older historical societies, it has always been a private organization, one that derives virtually all its support from membership and endowment. At the organizational meeting in 1831, Chief Justice John Marshall was elected its first president, and former president James Madison was elected its first honorary member.

I went to the Virginia Historical Society to do some family history research. All I can say is WOW!! They have a collection that stopped me in my tracks. I was not expecting there to be so much information. The staff were lovely and ready to provide assistance and answer questions.

Amazing we love to visit civil war museums to get a feel for different regions and outlooks. A comprehensive outlook of the war and the area.
We live near Richmond and visit the museum at least 3 times a year. The permanent collection is a great view of the State History. You can easily spend the better part of a day. Check their website for special exhibits which are always fantastic.
