My husband and I live on the Peninsula and travel to Portsmouth to eat here. The food is great and the portions are generous. The beer selection is fantastic and the atmosphere makes you feel like you are in Germany!!!
The Bar selection is unbelieveable. Hands down the place for the beer aficiando. Really really good food and good desserts too. The wait staff is cool and they don't smother you.
My wife come here 3-4 times a year, usually on Friday evenings. The place is always packed so come early to get a good seat. This restaurant serves authentic german food that never ceases to please. Our favorites include the schnitzel and sauerbrauten served with spatzle and a slice of strudel for dessert. The beer selection is the best in Hampton Roads and the service staff is only too eager to accomodate any questions. The decor is casual and reminiscent of a pub found in rural Germany, complete with gracious hosts and attentive wait staff.
A gem. A bier garden in the middle of Portsmouth transporting one to Munich. Great GermN food. Always delicious. Over the top beer selections. A great restaurant. Recommend without reservation.

Great ambiance and excellent food. The authentic food took me back to memories of my time in Germany. The beer menu was extensive and very reasonably priced giving the opportunity to try a wide range of real German beers. Being there for an early dinner I'm afraid a couple of our dishes may have been left from lunch. The Sauer Braten was tough and had some gristle. A nice authentic Bavarian Beir Garden. Lots of outside seating in season, enclosed for the winter season. Excellent selection of beers, ciders and wine. You could spend a week trying all the beers alone. The food was excellent and authentically prepared. A great value.

Very long beer list, most of which I had never heard of, but the waitress was very helpful in choosing.
Allow yourself time if going for dinner. We arrived at our reserved time and it took 15 minutes before our drink order was taken. We had to find a drink menu on our own. It was an hour later before our meal arrived. Granted it was friday night and they were busy. Our event began at 9 and I am so glad our reservations were set for over 2 hours earlier.

I love the relaxed feel of this place – like a comfortable dining room in a friends home. I definitely would return to try more dishes. Service was well-timed and friendly, wines were affordable.

The goulash was amazing, as were the semmelknoedel to sop up the sauce. The on tap IPA delish, but I cannot recommend the apfelstreudel (a bit soggy, and no white raisins...). All in all a great experience!

Great beer and awesome food. It's a great place to go before a concert at the Portsmouth Pavilion. Recommend reservations if going on a concert night.
The food is phenomenal!
Go when there are no festive events in Portsmouth. They have a limited space and kitchen so when these events occur, they tend to get overwhelmed. I think our food and service would have been much better if we had chosen another evening to go.
Always an excellent experience
I have to say we were disappointed this time. The service was very slow (she didn't even know we were there for about 10 minutes) and the server kept forgetting to bring us the beer and wine lists. We sat outside on what should have been a nice night but we were exposed to the cigarette smoke of people just outside the entrance and to the constant gratuitous cussing from the group seated next...
I celebrated my birthday here, and I had an extremely loud group which I definitely need to apologize for, but Bier Garden has been my favorite place to start out my birthday for the last 4 years. I enjoy it a little bit too much, and I always leave satisfied. Great place.

We absolutely loved everything we ordered. The menu is very well written and explains the items to a non-German customer base in an understandable way. Our server, Tiffany, was fantastic. The beer, atmosphere & German decor are all very authentic. The outdoor seating feels close to being in Germany in an establishment one would find in downtown Munich in summer. Of course, it's not Munich but, Portsmouth, a sweet historical American town which is unique and a short hop from Norfolk. This is my favorite restaurant in Portsmouth.

I can't believe I never knew about this place before now! The staff was friendly and helpful and made great recommendations. The food was delicious and almost as good as the real thing from Germany. The beer was fantastic and the prices reasonable. Even the decor was perfect. I'll definitely be back with other friends and family.
Really enjoyed the food here. I had a Schnitzel with the gravy on the side, yellow squash fried with onions and some authentic German potato salad. Go anywhere in the country and the toughest cuisine to find in the southeast is German. That's a shame because it's one of the most flavorful and adventurous foods in Europe. The good news is that located in Portsmouth Virginia is one of the best and most authentic German restaurants on the East Coast.

I eat at the Bier Garden on a regular basis, mostly for business lunches. I've never had a bad meal at this family owned and operated restaurant. This was the first time I was able to take my wife and she was ecstatic about her meal.

Previously we have had great food at the Bier Garden and that along with a great draft beer selection was a major reason to return. We were there after the grand illumination in Norfolk and arrived around 10pm on a Saturday to find out they were open, but with a partial menu. The food was not as good as in previous visits.

Having recently returned from Oktoberfest and a week in Munich, this place was just what the doctor ordered for satisfying my craving for more of the great cuisine and Munich Helles I loved while over there.
We were dining with some friends nearby and learned they had never been to the Bier Garden although both were raised in Portsmouth. We took them over after dinner to enjoy a beer. They loved it and now we all have plans to return for dinner. This restaurant does a fantastic job with food, great beer and service!
If you are in the area you should give this place a try. Great selection of beers and some wonderful German fare as well. Friendly service is also a plus!

Not impressed, except by the beer in the attached bar. The beer selection ia amazing. The schnitzel was very bad and the potato dumplings were disgusting and sent back to the kitchen. My son had the bratwurst which was very good. It may be worth a visit just avoid anything breaded especially the schnitzel.
Overall a memorable experience, food, drinks, service and ambience all very good. Minimal toilet facilities the only downer.

Stopped in for a quick bite to eat before going to the movies. Great service, excellent cheese and meat tray plus the coldest beer in town. when we left there was a line of folks waiting to get in. The Bier Garden is the best beer bar in Hampton Roads, VA!! But, the beer isn't the only thing going on for this unique establishment. The food is by far the best I've had in the area. The family owned restaurant makes you feel like you are really in a "Bier Garten", in Germany! A must go if you have not been here!
