The food was okay. Certainly overpriced. We had a question about our bill. I asked the server about it and he said to come up front and talk to the Owner. When I got up front the server was calling me very rude names to the owner(who did not care when I said something). He was also very short with the fact that we had children. The only good thing was the chef did a nice show, but it was not worth the money. 3 people should NOT spend almost 100 bucks o this food. Do not waste your money. Go to Wasabi or Geisha. They are so much better.
I'll have you know that a Deaf person have the same rights as ANY other person.
We live in the age of a wonderful life full of technology and have the access for anything. But to be insulted as "hearing impaired" is the worst you could say to me because I'm far from impaired.
Reason of my ranting on this page is this:
My friend called to make a reservation this Friday Nov 11th for her birthday only be insulted and discriminated just because she wasn't "hearing" enough. She contacted the restaurant through the Sorenson VRS, relaying her needs and whatnot through an Interpreter.
A female named LISA answered the phone and was nice UNTIL the Interpreter said she was calling for a Deaf person.
The named female said: "Oh no. Reservations are for hearing people and not the impaired."
I'm very very tempted to call this restaurant from Oklahoma, where I live, and call on my friend's behalf and ask for the manager to fire this moron that has discriminated just because we can't hear.
I do hope the owner of this business realize the implications of such discrimination because its against the law.
However, I shall reserve my voice for another time. I just needed to make this review.
--I'm sure the food good because my friend really wanted to make the reservation.
Thanks
Josh
I go to Virginia Beach every year for my vacation and I always eat at Shogun. They cooked the food in fron of us with a very entertaining chef who make us laugh all the time. This time I had lobster and beef. OMG!!! it's always perfect and now I became a big fan of Shogun restaurant. One time, I went to other Japanese steak house near by and I had a really bad experience there. Food was expensive and service was so bad. So I decided not to go any other japanese steak house other then Shogun..Thank you, Shogun.!
This is a great restaurant!!! The staff are really friendly, and the food is delicious! I wholeheartedly recommend it!
Excellent!!! Best food and entertainment compared to all the other japanese restaurants! (Ask for Ray) Servers are very friendly too. Restaurant looks a little dated but, I had to try it because I noticed they have won the " Best of the Beach" award every year. Now I see why! If you go there you won't be disappointed. The people complaining about the staff are crazy! They are the friendliest people I've ever met.
We have been going here for years and always enjoy ourselves! We have tried many others but this one is the best by far. In fact it has become our new years eve tradition.... and we have spent the last 10 years welcoming each new year at Shogun. We bring family and friends and always have a great time! 2008 will be ushered in the same way. our 11 year old loves it too!
Had a great time, great meal, great service, and great entertainment! The building's interior does look a bit "lived in" but this actually added to the atmosphere. The prices, although not cheap, are the lowest of any teppanyaki restaurant I have visited in Virginia.
My wife and my favorite restaurant. Wonderful food, great atmosphere. Just a fun place to go. We have been to all of the other Japanese steakhouses, and this one is the best by far.
very good sushi and drink but pricey. good, clean atmosphere and prompt service. worth going to on special occasions, but not all the time due to the prices.
Our favorite Sushi place. Always fresh. Friendly staff
Excellent food and service. Great Sushi bar.
My husband and I visited this place for the first time last night. Welcome staff was very nice. Service was poor. Our waitress socialized more than bringing us our food and drinks. It took us literally about 13-15min to get the water we ordered. The chef that prepared our meal acted as if he didn't want to be there. Everyone else's were throwing eggs in the air, building volcanos, talking and conversing with the people ours was a mute who broke egg pieces in our fried rice. We didnt get special treatment like the other customers. At the end of the night our bill was over $100.00 for the two of us. I dont think i will be returning here.
for my daughters b-day the table across from us was extremely loud (5) 12 year olds. parents were ignoring them. told the manager all he said was they got report cards, who cares. then the girls were spitting spit balls at us and mocking the people at our table finally management stepped in after big confrontations. this was the worst experience aver at a restaurant. i will never go back. this has been a tradition in my family for 15 years.
This was the first time that my family and I ate at this restaurant. We had a fabulous time. The food was great, and the service was wonderful.
Food was very good, Chef not excited to be there at all. Building is very dated and could use a good cleaning and an upgrade.
Pretty average and dated. Chef seemed unhappy to be there.
It is terrible! The building is about to fall apart. I felt dirty after eating there. I spent 70 dollars for a pile of **** on my plate. Please dont go there. Find a better place to eat.
TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE!! Resturant is dirty, carpets are filthy, Hibachi Grill not clean..Old food still on grill. Chef answered his cell phone in the middle of prepareing meal. We walked out before the meal was served. AVIOD!!!
I go to Shogun at least 2 to 3 times a week. They have a great staff and the best sushi. I have never had a bad experience at Shogun.
Food is great, atmosphere is very comfortable. My kids love it, they'd rather go there than Chuck-E-Cheese. We go atleast 1-2 times a month and have a better experience each and everytime. If you're more on the fun/extreme side, ask for Tony to be your cook, you'll have a blast!
For it being an upscale resturant, they are so friendly to my five year old. He has been going there scince he was one and he always has the best time. He always wants to go see the man make fire.
Our experience was horrible. We were treated like second rate customers. Not once were we tended to. Forget the playful comedic banter expected from the chef. We got " can you speak english" The beautiful blondes who ordered everything in sight pulled a classic "dine and ditch". I once heard, " never judge a book by its "color". I hope that was a lessoned learned.
This is the BEST Japanese restaurant in the Hampton Roads area for both sushi and dinner
It's the best in VA not only the beach and the staff there is always very polite and in very good moods.

Went and got sushi here with my boyfriend and had minimal expectations. Got a mango mojito and it was the BEST ONE I'VE EVER HAD IN MY LIFE, perfect. I went during happy hour and the rolls were $2...
this place freakin sucks. Totally over priced. I went there for hibachi last week. Their micso soup with onion and mushroom... Idk what that was but it wasn't good. Then the salad that comes with...
It's been taken over by new owners and the renovations are amazing. I always have a great time when I'm there and the food, sushi, and drinks are awesomeeeee.

My favorite restaurant ever!! Been going here for about 8-10 years!!
I like this place. It's not cheap, but not overpriced. They have a small selection of fish but they look healthy. For the guy whose wife bought the dogface puffer, how do you know that she didn't just point to the fish and say she wanted that one? If she had her heart set on one type of fish, shouldn't SHE know what that fish looks like? Anyway, this store also has a good selection of quality...
Amazing as usual. Even with the new ownership. Life is full of change...but this change is for the good. Keep up the good work!
After 16 years of being a loyal customer to ShoGun, it offically ended tonight. I noticed the change food wise first. Never knew shrimp came in such a small size but that explains the new ownership. Sometimes leaving things the way they were is better than changing things. Wish you all the best but when you start taking from consumer, you lose business. Miss the way Mr Duke treated his...

Excellent food. It's been awhile since we have stopped in here for dinner but it was well worth it. The food was very good, as always, and the entertainment is always fun. Always try the different sake...hot or cold...when you go.
Best hibachi at the beach! I have tried numerous other hibachi restaurants in Virginia Beach and nothing compares. The hibachi portions are so huge that you're almost guaranteed another meal. The sushi is fresh and the plating is always so unique and pretty. All the staff are incredibly helpful and seem happy to be at work. The mood at Shogun is absolutely fantastic. Sometimes on busy nights...
Good. Haven't been in some time since now have great Japanese Steak house near my home but I have always loved Shogun and love their ginger salad dressing. Anyone know how to make it? It is a little overpriced though but they do serve ample portions.
Just What I Hoped For!. Shogun is a great place. I have the most special memories from this place. So recently I was able to pay her a visit. Still the same, great service, great food quality, and AMAZING Skill from the Chef's! So much fun, so worth the wait, (Make reservations), and so worth the price. Check em out. The bigger the group the better, but do them favor of calling ahead for your...
I would NEVER tell anyone to go to this place. The chef put on a show, but the food is not good. The wait staff is blah. Ours called me named to the owner and was rude about asking for napkins and shrimp sauce for my kids. I talked to the owner about an issue and the fact that the server called me names and he was very dismissive. The food is overpriced, and blah. Go to Geisha. They are great and nice to the customers.
Horrible. We had a Japanese exchange student visit us in August. We introduced her to lots of American eateries but wanted her to see Japanese food in the US. Of course, we went to sushi bars near our house but drove all the way out to Shogun so she could see the hibachi. It was SO dissapointing! Blah food that was taken over by the taste of soy sauce...boring chef who made a few tired jokes...
This place is terrible, it's that simple. I'm pretty forgiving, but lines have been crossed.
The atmosphere is nice, and the staff is friendly, I can't fault them for anything. For what it is the prices are alright as well.
The food is mediocre at best. It's the worst I've eaten at in Virginia Beach, but there are a lot of little hole in the wall places I've never tried. It's greasy and fatty, even for Asian, and they skimp on the seasoning, badly.
The sanitation is what's really an atrocity. The fact that the health department hasn't shut them down can only be attributed to...
It was okay. With other Japanese steak houses I've tried the quality of the food simply did not quite meet the high standard I expected when it comes to entertainment and food quality. The food was pretty good, but I would recommend another place more.
That was so fast. Didnt even finish typing before the info came up. Wow
very fun for the whole family, great food. NOt very expensive and a lot of bang for you buck.
I went for my birthday and had the best time! The shrimp is a MUST and so is the saki!
Interesting Ginger dressing on salad, but poor reflection on the Erica
Sushi Roll, and the spider roll is most foul. Very disappointed.
Nice decor and well designed out. The show is medicore the several times that I have been at lunches or dinners. Seems a a bit pricey for the quality of food and ambience. Their Teppanyaki is definitely the focus -minimal on the sushi.
Pros
+ Ambience for group fun
Cons
- Average food
I can't remember how a friend and I found this place, because it was back off the beaten path from where we usually are in this area. The hostess and the sushi chef always recognized us when we came in, and always remembered how my friend ...
After having tried most of the sushi restaurants in the beach and Norfolk, Shogun has my vote hands down. The only restaurant remotely comprable is Momo's, which at one point had Shogun employee's working there as well. Shogun's staff makes the experience far superior to that of others, regardless of if you are getting something to go or dining in.
Shogun is a typical Japanese restraunt the portion size has diminished over the last few years but the quality of the food is very good and flavorful. The bar service can be slow but the pricing is on par with most other local restraunts. We first visited in 2001 when we moved to the area and have returned many times because of the athmosphere and friendly staff.
WORSE than horrible!! Went there baed on their ads in tour guide. What they said best in town for 5 years is BULL S!@#. The sashimi deluxe was horrible!! Extremely cheap and thin slices worth only $10 overpriced at $30. Teppanyaki chef is ok. Rice is not enough for any regular adult. Serivce is worse than horrible that they initially refused to add additional bowl of rice for free. THIS...
Shogun is a great place to go for chane of scenery and type of food.
At the shogun I like watching them make my food right in front of
me. That makes it even better
my boyfriend and i love sho gun
Good show at the grill area. Kids will like very much. Sushi is
pretty good as well. A++
The SceneSlit curtains separate four cozy dining sections. As far as the Japanese Steak house style food, this is not bad,
I have eaten here more than a dozon times, I Perfer to go to Sumo's
on Independence though.
Best part of the meal is the Saki.
The only bad experince that I have had here is when someone trys
to feed 4 people and only order 2 meals, then you get shorted. good
Sushi though.
Not a bad place, but DEFINITELY not one of the ""best of the beach"" regardless of constantly being voted that. Sushi is mediocre at best. What Shogun has going for it is atmosphere-- it is exactly what someone not very familiar with/ comfortable with Japanese food wants-- the requisite ""set pieces"" in the decor, the whole teppanyaki show, a very simplified menu. Its ""exotic"" for suburbia and that has its audience-- but for really great Japanese food look elsewhere!
Pros
+ friendly, nonthreatening, plenty of parking
Cons
- predictable, nonthreatening, expensive
The best Steak House in Virginia Beach, American style or Japanese. Great Tepan Chefs prepare the food right in front of your eyes with elegant style. Try the Filet Migon with Shrimp. Save your money and get the free white rice instead of the fried rice which you pay an extra dollar for.
Has a great Sushi Bar to boot.
Pros
+ Cute Korean Waitress', Good Parking, Reasonable Food Price
Cons
- Expensive Drinks, Extra for Fried Rice
This was a great restraunt. The food is wonderful, the service
is great, and the cooks kick a lot of butt. I'm only 17, but i love
to dine at nice restraunts and so far this is one of the best i have
been to. Also, the salad is bangin.
This is really a good choice if you like the cook it at the table
style of Japanese food. I recommend it!
Fantastic food and service. I have been there several times and have enjoyed it each time. All the servers are great, but I recommend asking for Danny. He puts on a great show!
Loved it!!!
My husband and I visited this charming restaurant late one evening. Actually it was rather close to closing time and the people at my table ended up staying after closing but we were still enjoyably welcomed. The food was flavorfull and the surroundings beautiful. Presentation is a little messy but considering they cook your food right in front of you and are not serving out of bowl ect this is...
