Editorial reviews from the web (4)

Proprietor James Shields served the lesser gentry and upper middling ranks of locals and travelers in the 1740s. Today, the largest of the colonial taverns now serves more than just light fare, though gumbo soup, salads, wrap sandwiches, and pie are still popular. Heartier food includes traditional 18th-century fare such as welsh rarebit (spicy cheese served over toast) and more modern dishes...

Evidently, the powers that be decreed four full-on taverns with a large "Bill of Fayre" to be overkill, so Shields has become a coffeehouse instead. While lamenting the demotion of the magnificently cranky host, James Shields—a scenery-chewing part that allowed actors large portions of ham—one has to admit this is useful (and besides, Shields still makes an appearance). During the day, you sit...

In 1766, Josiah Chowning announced the opening of a tavern "where all who please to favour me with their custom may depend upon the best of entertainment for themselves, servants, and horses, and good pasturage." It's charming, with low-beamed ceilings, raw pine floors, and country-made furnishings. There are two working fireplaces, and at night you dine by candlelight. These days it's once...

With 11 dining rooms and a garden under a trumpet-vine-covered arbor that seats 200, Shields is the largest of the Historic Area's tavern/restaurants. It's named for James Shields who, with his wife, Anne, and family, ran a much-frequented hostelry on this site in the mid-1700s. Based on a room-by-room inventory of Shields' personal effects, the tavern has been furnished with items similar to...

We made our reservation 2 months ahead of time for New Year's Eve with a group of friends. We arrived and the place was completely out of beer, half of the cocktails, and number of items on the menu. Ridiculous. The server told us it was because they were going to be closing down for January. Not an excuse when you've been completely booked for a holiday for months. Should have been totally...

Overall a pleasant dining experience. The only downside was that we were seated in a small, two table room, that was obviously a wait staff station turned into seating space. The wait station was still in use and we we a through space to the kitchen. In spite of the poor seating, we had a nice dinner.

I can't complain about the service, our waiter was excellent. But, even with a reservation, they sat us in the basement near a table of screaming children and right next to a guy who was basically dying. The food is a bit overpriced, but one has to expect that in these historic-themed places.

This tavern is in the Revolutionary City portion of Colonial Williamsburg, and it is set up in a historic manner. As a place to eat out in a tourist location, this tavern was what you expect but nothing more. The food was good but a bit pricey and the roving musician was appropriate for the venue. But I have dined at other locations in Colonial Williamsburg which go to a greater effort to...

The food was very good, but it was hard to enjoy it because it was so cold at our table that we were eating bundled up in our coats and hats. Not only were the nine of us seated where blasts of cold came down the stairs from the door, but our table was in front of a huge unlit fireplace, and the cold air was coming down the flue. After a frigid day of our walking around Williamsburg, we were...

Amazing dining experience! Everyone who visits Colonial Williamsburg should plan to dine here. Service is impeccable, the ambiance is unique with historical relevance, and the food is delicious. We were treated to a live duet on violin and mandolin, as costumed interpreters introduced patrons to songs of the colonial era. A highly memorable experience!

Our first time at Shields, and it didn't disappoint. Pleasant 18th century tavern atmosphere to cap off a day of walking around Williamsburg. Outstanding food, prepared based on early colonial fare and spices. The service was excellent and friendly, and contrasted (brief historical explanation) of what people experienced in the late 1600's to today's tavern. Shield's Tavern is one of several choices in the Restored Areas of Colonial Williamsburg. The ambiance is key as it tends to be expensive. Service is routinely good, and servers and entertainers are clad in colonial garb. It's not difficult to imagine experiencing 18th Century Colonial America.

The food was delicious and appropriate for the period and Colonial Williamsburg. However, the service was lacking. The waitress was very attentive at first but disappeared and was no where to be found when I wanted to order a second beer. Even after I ordered it, I had finished my meal before it arrived. I sent it back. I had the pork chop and my wife had the potted beef. Both were superb.

We were unhappy because we go for the true Tavern feel in the 18th century and we were seated downstairs, in the basement, by a bunch of huge parties. I want o try it again, but only on the condition that I can specify to not be seated in the basement. There was nothing patently "wrong" with the basement, it's just I wanted the tavern mood, not just "any old restaurant" kind of feel.

This place was awesome! The atmosphere takes you back in time.

The characters enhance the experience along with , the

service, and the food. Make an afternoon or evening of this place
and you'll have a wonderful time! A bit pricey, but worth
evry penny of it!

Sadly, the highlight came with a lowlight. In Art’s words, this was cafeteria food. Turkey and bread that I could have gotten in any grocery store and mediocre potato salad. I tried to convince myself that we just ordered poorly, but, every other sandwich I had on this trip was amazing compared to what we got at Chowning’s. The turkey could have been carved from a real bird. The bread could...

Second Visit as Good as the First. We started with the Corn and Shrimp Chowder; light and flavorful. For the main course we had Ale-potted Beef - fork-tender Beef simmered in an Ale-laced Sauce that gives it a subtle sweetness and full, rich beef flavor. Baby carrots, pearl onions and celery cooked perfectly - al dente - with tender potatoes and mushrooms. And yes, we dined by candle light in a...

To the Stocks with the Tavern Keeper!. What a waste of time and money. I've been to Williamsburg every year for a decade growing up in Richmond so it was a while before I cared to visit the place as an adult. After hiking around the attractions all day and fretting over which Tavern to try for a meal, we settled on this one because the wait was shorter. There was a reason why fewer people...

Another great colonial dining experieince. Food and service are great. The man who portrays Mr. Shields is a hoot! Kids will get a kick out of him.

Chowning's for "the middling' sort" (middle class) This is another colonial tavern which is just as good as King's Arms and Shields but a bit more affordable. Try the Brunswick Stew or the "Bubble and Squeak". I know a ten year old who loves the "pulled pork barbeque sandwich". Also for evening adult entertainment try out "Gambols" an eighteenth century evening of games and entertainment.
