The Museum of the Albemarle is located in downtown Elizabeth City with a nice parking area. This is a relatively new building of 2 floors (with elevator) and there is much about the history of the local area. There are beautiful permanent exhibits and usually a special visiting one. We were passing through Elizabeth City looking at boat anchorages and found this beautiful building. The museum was staffed by friendly knowledgeable people. The quality of the exhibits rivals the Smithsonian. Everything beautifully restored an exhibited.

Enjoyed learning the history of the area and seeing the multitude of displays. Especially of interest was the salvaged house and smokehouse, as well as the letters saved from the Civil War era.

Went to this regional museum yesterday and was very impressed. The exhibits were well displayed, informative, and so inclusive of the region. Well done! And the gift shop has so many local craft items, always a sign that the museum is valued in the area.

There is plenty for adults and they incorporate really GOOD stuff for...

Definitely worth the trip. Exhibits were well displayed and documented. Very interesting.
The museum really stands out as there really isn't much else to do in Elizabeth City. We enjoyed our time at the museum, but probably will not visit Elizabeth City again.

This museum is worth making the hour or so detour off US17 to get a view of coastal North Carolina life and history. Great, modern, spacious museum with excellent exhibits and very good self-guided signage. This covers early settlement, revolutionary period, antebellum, civil war, industrial revolution and civil rights. Also, very interesting insights into Coast Guard developments because of...
