Since 1965, Matt Umanov Guitars has been buying, selling, and repairing vintage guitars. Hundreds of new and old guitars, basses, mandolins, lap steels, ukuleles, and more, in stock.
Matt Umanov Guitars was dealing in vintage guitars before anybody thought to call them vintage. Since the days when an "old guitar" meant a herringbone Martin or a '50s Fender, Matt Umanov has been providing guitarists from the New York area - as well as from all over the world - with top quality instruments, and a repair department that is second to none. Whether you're after Gibson acoustic...
"Beautiful instruments" lure strummers to this West Village purveyor of new and vintage guitars, mandolins, banjos and ukuleles, offering an incredible selection, plus "expert repairs", since 1965; the atmosphere is "relaxed", with "helpful" staffers (musicians themselves) who will "encouragingly let you play anything" – yes, "there are cheaper places", but admirers attest "they're not in the...
There's something intensely attractive—as a musician—about a store that using gels in their display window to keep their guitars from getting sun-damaged. It's that attention to little but important details that has made Matt Umanov Guitars a favorite of local musicians and a Bleecker Street mainstay. The guitars run the gamut from vintage to brand new, and their huge selection of pedals is...
I think this place is awesome. One of the things that made it so great was the customer service. Ardell (hoping I'm spelling that right) helped me pick out the perfect Christmas gift. I went in...
Great little shop that hopefully sticks around for quite a while.
This place is completely unremarkable. I've been here a number of times over the years and somehow I forgot that I shouldn't go back. They probably have a few okay guitars but you'll never find...
I've just begun teaching myself guitar and had a couple of strings on my guitar that needed replacing. I took my guitar in to get the strings and not only did they advise on the right strings, but...
Awesome little boutique shop. Beautiful inventory & a knowledgable staff. Great for electric & acoustic-minded enthusiasts alike.
I got my ukulele here after a great deal of research and I couldn't be happier with my choice. My gretsch has a beautiful sound but bonus, I got a free soft case and a set of strings (aguila-the best). They have a gorgeous selection of vintage and new guitars alike and practice rooms available for lessons.
Had a fantastic experience purchasing a ukelele yesterday. Tried several ukes in the $400-1500 range. One of the guys there, Zeke, got a feel for what I wanted out of my uke (performance) and turned me on to a much more affordable item but one that would play just as well through a PA or amp than any of …
I own about 20 or so higher end acoustic guitars so I'm pretty well acquainted with the usual lineup, Gibsons, Martins, Taylors, and so on. On their web site, I saw that they were official dealers of Guild guitars, a particular favorite brand of mine. So I headed over there to check out if they would have …
I give the guitars a 5 but the staff a 2. Now I know that sounds harsh and the woman behind the desk was really cool but the other guys workinmg there just have that music salesperson condasending attitude. We are all musicians man, dont look down on me because I am just getting strings!
At May 26 we visited Umanov shop, hoping to buy two acoustic guitars by 5k.My friend and colleague John start to play at one guitar to check it (not so good, IMHO, i'm personally like other guitar, but it doesn't matter). He's playing prett...
I have no idea about ""attitude."" I got great service. The guy bought us guitars in our price range and spent two hours working with us. He did not try any of that ""well, this is just a bit out of your range, but I think you might like it."" In fact, he sold us down and not up. He did not offer his opinion until late in the game because he did not want to push us into something we might regret later. All this for what they would consider a ""low end"" acoustic.
It was a great experience and I will use them again and again.
Pros
+ Patient respectful staff
Friends told me to watch out for the big attitude here. This place may have been something years ago but it was a waste of time totally.Better prices and service at GC.My first and last visit.
A relatively large music store on Bleecker, it's well stocked with a wealth of acoustic and electric guitars. I've recently purchased a Guil...
I went to this store with high expectations, it had been recommended to me. The staff had a certain air about them at first that I as a musician am aware with, it was the whole Jack Black thing in High Fidelity. I know more than you. But as time went on , my experience there morphed into the type of thing where I would ask a question about say a 4thousand or 10thousand dollar instrument I was being shown, and would get answers like ""look, we only pick really good guitars here, they are all approved by Matt Umanov personally , and so they wouldnt be here if they werent good."" Well, I...
This store has been selling new and vintage guitars since 1965 but that doesn't tell the whole story because they also do excellent repairs and upgrades. Don't worry if you're not a challenger to Eric Clapton's reputation as the world's gr...
Matt Umanov Guitars has some of the coolest guitars and amps in the city. I'd rather buy something here than at Sam Ash and Guitar Center. You can negotiate on some of the stuff here and they have a small jam room. The staff is pretty ch...
Matt Umanov's is a main stay guitar shop in the West Village's Bleecker street. It isn't a big place so when you walk in the door you may feel like an outsider by the attention you draw from those who work there. That fades away because the...
Matt's is a great place to find new and used guitars and a nice place to spend some time checking out the merchandise (no stairway please!).Located on a busy street in the west village, Umanov's is where the pros come to play and buy. They h...
