Help us make it rightJust off of Route 704 is a natural haven for bird-watchers and outdoor enthusiasts. The park features two bathing beaches, a fishing pier, boat ramp, hiking trails, camp sites, playground, picnic sites, RV parks and trailers. Bird-watchers can spend...
Situated on the Chesapeake Bay, three miles from the northern terminus of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, the 536-acre Kiptopeke State Park has been the site of bird population studies sponsored by the Coastal Virginia Wildlife Observatory and licensed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service since 1963. Popular recreational activities enjoyed here include camping, hiking, fishing, and swimming....

Located on the eastern shore of Virginia, this park offers recreational access to the Chesapeake Bay and the chance to explore a unique coastal habitat featuring a major...
Definitely returning as soon as we can. They never bothered us and everyone was very. Ice. The little camp store had just what we needed including some ice cream on these hot days. Beaches … Definitely returning as soon as we can. They never bothered us and everyone was very. Ice. The little camp store had just what we needed including some ice cream on these hot days. A group of us reserved two lodges at Kiptopeke State Park for the first weekend on January. Each lodge had 6 rooms (2-queens, 2-twins, 2-bunks), 3 full bathrooms, fully stocked kitchen and a nice open living room with gas fireplace. We enjoyed hiking thru the woods and walking on the beach. Very enjoyable! Downtown Cape Charles is 5 miles north...
Having camped at Kiptopeke with our RV, we recently stayed at Kiptopeke in their lodges, which are FANTASTIC. We rented 2 lodges, as we were with 7 other couples, 4 couples per lodge. Each lodge accommodates 16, however 2 of the bedrooms are set up for kids, with bunk beds. The lodges are open and airy with the impressive cathedral...
Trails are well maintained and wildlife is abundant. All trails are easy to traverse and several have buildings to view song birds and water fowl from without disturbing them.
My husband and I love hiking and since Back Bay Wildlife Refuge (our first choice) was closed for hunting, we thought we'd try this park. We came from Virginia Beach and our experience was dampened a bit when we realized we had to pay a $13 toll to get to the island. I thought, ok, probably won't have to pay...
Kiptopeake is very popular with families, for camping, fishing, boating. The beach and fishing pier are protected by the concrete ships that form a barrier to storms. Even when full the park is not overcrowded. Relax and enjoy
Great butterfly garden, easy trails, great sunset view where Wood Warbler Boardwalk ends at the beach!
We only had a short time there, but found it to be one of the most enjoyable parks we have ever seen.
What a beautiuful state park located on the Chesapeake Bay with the bridge tunnel nearby. There is an area for fishing from the pier, a launch ramp for boats and kayaks and a campground for those hardy folks that enjoy camping. There is a breakwater that is made up of nine old concrete ships that were originally used during the...
My husband and I originally stopped here to check out the LOVE chairs, which are no longer there, however we stayed around and enjoyed the sights. There is a good bit to do there, we didn't stay long to check it all out, but it's worth a quick pit stop.
Good spot for birders: hawk watch platform has official counter throughout the fall. Plus butterfly gardens and monarch tagging program. Updated facilities. Clean & well maintained.
Recently, I had the chance to visit the Kiptopeke State Park for a three day sea kayak symposium that headquartered in the park. While I spent most of my time in the water, I got to see much of what the park had to offer. It has nice, clean, and sandy beaches, is pet friendly, and has an excellent fishing...
We stopped here to spend a couple of days camping. What a pleasant surprise. The park has adequate facilities with access to the beach and coastal waterway. Kayaks are available for rent for cheap money and the crabbing (blue) is great at the right time of year.
We did a day trip to Kiptopeke State Park just to check it out for a future staycation. The Park is well maintained and there are quite a few employees. The campgrounds were organized and clean. They even have a Yurt available for rent. The beaches were clean but a little too shallow with not enough waves. Probably good for...
Really nice park just off of route 13 before the bridge and tunnel. Wooden boardwalks, bay views, fishing pier, seashells to collect, a store and a network of trails. Great for birding. A must stop for a few hours to check it out.
This park has it all. Two beaches on the Chesapeake Bay, a fishing pier (with a fish cleaning station), boat ramp, changing rooms with showers, cabins and a campground. One of the beaches has a very, very gentle slope making it suitable for little ones. The other is more typical but both are white sand. Admission is $4, more if...
This was a very nice place with a small beach and great fishing peer. The water was clean and they have these cool concrete ships that serve as a natural barrier. Vert neat to see.
Great fishing from pier. Stingray, eel, shark, panfish, croaker, puffer, etc... Open 24/7. Drawback is the parking fee and fee to fish from pier.
We didn't stay here at park, but we were staying 15 mins down the road on the Cape Charles beach. We came here 4 days during our week stay, and with the admission being only $4 a day during the week, we felt we got a great value. Our 4 kids loved the playground, and the beach was clean and...
The campground at Kiptopeke State Park has a lot to offer - hiking, swimming, kayaking, fishing, crabbing, birding and more! Sites are relatively level, most very large with a good amount of shade. My only reason for giving 4 circles instead of 5 is that they let tenters take up sewer sites when there is a section reserved for only...
Stopped by on my way to the OBX. There is a $4 charge to enter. There was a large area for fishing and crabbing on the bay. Camping was available. I was interested in birds and flowers and didn't see much of either. I stopped at the nature eastern shore nature center just up the road and got my fill...
Family friendly fishing, beach, biking and birding...love camping here and visiting in general...one of my favorite places to visit
My husband and I enjoy escaping to Kiptopeke State Park for relaxing long weekends. The park really has so much to offer if you want to hike, ride bikes, kayak, fish, swim in the Chesapeake or just sit back and read. The staff is wonderful and the facilities are spotless. The local area doesn't have much to offer in the way...
great fishing pier. make sure you take a picture of the :LOVE chairs on the beach. Trails are a quiet little break from everyday life
We camped at Kiptopeke State Park for 5 days over the July 4th holiday. We have a travel trailer and were able to get one of the full hookup sites that was in the shade, right next to the campground hosts.
If you just want to camp and go to the beach, this is a nice place to stay. It's...
This is truly one of the hidden gems of the Eastern Shore. The park has a weekly calendar of events from learning to fish to sunset kayaking all offered for unbelievably affordable prices. In addition, there is a very nice swimming beach and tons of hiking/biking trails. We did both the fishing and the kayaking and were very impressed with...
The camp sites are large enough to fit a 8-10 person tents. The sites are used for both tents and trailers. The site has both bathrooms and hot showers. There are showers on the beach as well if there is a need to remove the salt before going back to the camp site. The beach is extremely private and extremely...
Just a sweet little well run park with helpful staff and great sea views. Hiking, fishing and even overnight accommodations are all you could want in a State Park.
We camp here repeatedly.we live just an hour away, but we come here for great camping, bicycling, fishing and resturants! the beach here is wonderful, but you may have to pay a day fee(Cape Charles beach in town is free)
What an amazing park! We camped there over the weekend and plan to come back for more. The tent campsite is very beautiful, private (unlike the RV camping area), clean, a very short walk to the swimming-only beach. There are showers and changing cabins on the beach on the pier side (toward the camp store and the huge pile of...
We didnt stay and camp - but plan too soon! Drove through on our way home from the Eastern Shore and loved Kiptopeake! We marked down a few campsites to check on when we come back!
If planning on swimming, there are no changing rooms or bathrooms close to the beach but just plan on using the bathrooms in the campgrounds to wash off the sand or use the facilities. Nice boat launch and fishing pier that is open 24 hrs a day. They sunk ships off the coast to start a reef and the water...
We are new to RV-ing and found no problem with the size of the RV sites at Kiptopeke, unlike Cherrystone Campground, where the RV sites are so tight and on top of each other that we won't even consider staying there. As we were leaving Virginia Beach, another RV-er on the road asked where we were headed, and we replied...
For five dollars, or for any fee, I expected to see more. Granted, I only drove to the lot to look out over the water for a half hour, but nothing spectacular. It may have been more stimulating had we went hiking, camping, or fishing.
We camped here in our 5th wheel for three nights. The campground is clean and well laid out. It is the only state campground in Virginia with full hookups (others don't have sewer). There are many miles of well maintained trails for hiking or jogging. The beaches are beautiful and there's a breakwater made from "Liberty ships" that's both effective...
We visited Kiptopeke State Park in the early evening and found it peaceful and beautiful. The Concrete Ships were the perfect backdrop for the beautiful sunset. The campground looked full of happy families and the smell of food grilling was wonderful :) The giant Adirondack Chairs are fun! I wish the little camp store had been open - it looked...
I was blown away by Kiptopeke State Park, it was a fantastic park.
To give a little background, I read the reviews here and was hesitant but decided I would give the park the reasonable doubt thing and check it out first hand. We all know there are people who are miserable wherever they go, so I won't listen to...
Close beach access. Separate area for tent camping (which is good because the rv sites are just in a field row). Lodges available. Boat launch.
Lots of places to walk and check out the birds and other critters that hang out in the woods. Nice beach, fishing pier, butterfly garden, and the concrete ships that form the breakwater made for an interesting visit We were there while the rangers were banding birds that were captured in the nets.
Nice stop.
A wonderful, quiet way to enjoy the beach and the coastal forests. Lots of easy walks and no crowds (in October). Loads of birds in the fall.
Stayed there a month very good park! Very nice trails and biking, fishing, beach. Easy to get to everything locally?
Wow, what a nice surprise. We headed here over the long weekend to see a variety of birds. We strolled a little over 4.5 miles along well maintained, level and wide trails (not the place to work on your conditioning). Signage, both educational and trail marking was superb. We saw numerous birds, perhaps the high points were the sighting of...
This park has a wonderful diversity of habits for bird watching, and it's on the flyway. Many, many birds are funneled through here in the fall.
I was very let down last weekend on my visit to the park. Portable johns by the pier had been removed because people had complained about the odor. Now you have to use the shower/bath house that is used by the beach crowd. Why is there not a bath closer to the pier since you have to pay an extra...
This park has it all! Right over the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel is trails, fishing, and beach front for all to enjoy. It is very quiet. There are also campgrounds on site. It is really beautiful and you will see the latest "LOVE" artwork.
Kiptopeke state park is your basc state park. While it has dated ships anchored near the beach, us and the dog did not explore them. Instead we hiked most of the 4 miles of trails to include parts of the beach. NOTE: if you hike south on the beach from the Warbler boardwalk, you must hike out and back. If...
Very nice view of the bay from the pier. The beach looked beautiful. The huge chairs with LOVE was so cute. My husband and I had a great time walking around. Then we visited the little gift shop for a cold drink. The gentlemen working there was very nice.
Small clean beach. One accessible rest room area. One small gift shop with some cold drinks as well. Walked the raptor trail - boring. Nice getaway for a couple hours not the entire day. More enticing for fishing/boats at the pier. Only small fee for parking.
Great view, did some catch and release crabbing while we were staying in the area. Good place to watch the sunset.
This state park is located directly on the Chesapeake Bay. It's a great place to fish, hiking, biking and birding. This area is a migratory path for birds. Certain times of the year are better. Beautiful.....
Went fishing here and went on the beach. Even in peak summer season it was not crowded. Fee was $3 per car load.
The SettingLocated on the eastern shore of Virginia, this park offers recreational access to the Chesapeake Bay and the chance to explore a unique coastal habitat featuring a major flyway for migratory birds. The FacilityThe full-service campground offers sites with water, electric and sewer hookups, hot showers and restrooms, as well as tents-only camp area with no hookups. Each site has its...
One of the best spots for bird-watching.

The park features a fishing pier, boat launch, beach and guarded swimming area during the summer, Memorial Day to Labor Day.
Pets are not allowed on the beach.
Many birds of prey are observed and banded here from September through November. Kiptopeke's hawk observatory is among the top 15 nationwide.
