This church is beautiful and full of a rich history. It's a beautiful place to visit but I would absolutely not suggest it as a place to get married. I attended a wedding as a guest and the...
The experience I had at St. Luke's was outstanding. The staff was great and very friendly. The history aspect of the church was the best part I must say. The American Heritage Chocolate was a...
One of the earliest churches, if not the earliest church in America. Beautifully preserved. Nice tour explaining the history of the congregation and facility. Beautiful grounds. It's history. It's...

We didn't tour the inside of the church (there is a fee, but it is nominal). We just felt we had seen lots of beautiful churches so just enjoyed walking around the grounds (which was free to do). Lots of old headstones in a beautiful setting.
What a wonderful tour we had here. Thanks to Gloria our docent.
I am amazed that after visiting churches in the U.S. and Europe, I still have lots to learn.
This was a fascinating piece of history.
Tours were $5.00 ($4.00 for seniors) and worth every penny.
Don't miss the gift shop. They have some wonderful unusual pieces.
The parking...
The stained glass windows here were absolutely beautiful. The history of this building makes you really think about how things were while this country was being formed. It was a great place for me and my family to stop and prey.

Had no idea this church existed. It is the oldest Gothic church in the US. A stunning brick structure with stained glass windows imported from Europe, this church has witnessed our history since 1632! Built just 25 years after Jamestown was founded and nearly failed, the Anglican parishioners garnered the wealth to construct a church that has stood (renovated, of...
If you are traveling in southeastern Virginia, you will enjoy taking the time to visit this, the oldest church building in the country. The docent will show you around and tell you about the history of this 1632 church. The setting itself is lovely and peaceful. Well worth a visit!
Where else do you enter a church by stepping UP through the wooden door? With that move it is as if you're stepping back into time. St. Luke's is a beautiful church, the oldest of Gothic architecture in the United States. Our tour guide Matt did an amazing job of taking us through the structure and story of St. Luke's,...
This is one of the oldest churches in America and has be preserved over the years. It is a must see and visit fi you come to Smithfield . They still hold services here and also have many extra events scheduled throughout the year.
It is a short quick tour and the church is beauitful. It has a nice gift shop. A nice history lessons.
This lovely church and grounds are a trip back to the early days of Virginia and make the link back to the English culture that prevailed here better than any museum with modern electronic interpretations could possibly do. The docent was very knowledgeable about the history of the structure architecturally, culturally, and provided an outstanding tour. The grave yard alone...
Lovely old church immaculately restored down to the hand-waxed woodwork. Only complaint was that the docent knew the history of the church and community but was not well versed in the history of the Church of England in colonial America. Not sure if she really knew what kind of church this was in the early years.
Knowledgeable Guide, interesting history, loved the graveyard. The entrance way was especially interesting and the apparatus over the minister was to improve acoustics.
Like so much of the area, you just don't find building of this age and history elsewhere. Worth a visit.
We visited here while in Colonial Williamsburg. Beautiful setting and very knowledgeable and friendly guides. The church is absolutely beautiful, and the stained glass windows are magnificent.
Historic St. Luke's is far enough from the highway that passes nearby that one can almost get a sense of being in another era. It is interesting to sit in this historic edifice and consider the colonists that might have been in this beautiful building when it was new. The grounds are lovely and have been "restored" by the Garden...
Visited St. Luke's Church while staying in Smithfield. Definitely worth the time and small entrance fee. The docent ( Cindy ) was excellent. Very knowledgable and made us feel welcome. If visiting Williamsburg / Jamestown highly recommend a visit to St. Luke's.
This lovely old English Gothic church, tucked back off the existing highway, has been lovingly preserved. We were given a very detailed and informative tour by the docent. A lovely way to spend an hour in this quaint little town.
This is the oldest English Gothic church in the country, built in 1632. The church itself is made of local brick and oyster shell mortar. The inside has 16th-18th century furniture and stained glass.
The woman who gave us the tour was great. She tied the church history in with other local sites from the same time period (Jamestown era)....
Very old and interesting church. Not used as practicing church since 1880s. Very historic. There was an admission charge, I guess to help with the upkeep. Knowledgeable docent.
This super rare example of an early 17th-century english brick church is a must see attraction while visit Hampton Roads and Greater Williamsburg. Part of your day trip to Smithfield, make sure to enjoy the gorgeous grounds and ancient structure. The gift shop is also a welcoming store full of goodies from books that aid genealogical research to jewelry. Charlotte...
Museum you can touch and use - Its still a working church. Loved the area around the church and its history.
this place is a must-see for all Virginians--and for others as well
The history of this place is fantastic! The oldest brick church in America--and its charming location makes it a great respite from the surrounding bric-a-brac development---thank you for keeping this place pristine
Lovely setting. This church is small but looks just like you'd imagine a church would have looked back when our great nation was starting out.
Wonderful guided tour for a small fee. Outstanding tour of this well kept gothic building. the entrance had a door within a door. the ceiling looked like inside a huge upside down nordic ship. The colors of the stained class windows were very rich. They played a tape of the doxology played on a very unique organ. Wonderful. Also great...
The venue for my daughter's wedding should have been perfect, and would have been if not for a grand mistake on the part of the two women who control this churchs events. They were very difficult...
We had a very knowledgeable guide who shared plenty of interesting facts and tidbits. The grounds are lovely and it is great to see something so well preserved.
this was a great historical tour with lots of information, great building and grounds. Just happened to be touring with the 10th generation grandson of the founder of the church...made for interesting and reverent visit. Beautiful windows. $5. in an easy location but no signs to find it.....
We go here to take pictures. It is a beautiful place with a lot of history.
My husband is a photographer and this is a great place for beautiful pictures. Nice place for weddings too.
Beautifully restored- worth the trip to see. Very good guided tour.
History abounds from dates in the 17th Century forward in the church as well as in the restored cemetery. Part of Smithfield, Va.'s heritage. Important architecturally.
Wonderful tour guide and fantastic church and grounds, well worth finding in an out-of-the way site near Smithfield, Virginia. One of the most beautiful, serene and well maintained churches we have visited over the years.
We took a very informative tour of St Luke's for a very small price of $4.00 each. In addition to the church the graveyard is full of graves many over 200 years old.
The tour was nice. I enjoyed seeing the old organ.
The historic organ was beautiful. What looked like a drawing on the front actually concealed the pipes and it was nice to hear a recording of a recital played on it. The docent's tour was very informative.
This is a great addition if you are touring the town of Smithfield. The Church was built in 1632 and is still in great shape. The guides are very knowledgeable about the churchs history. Take time to view some of the old graves at the church. Great place to learn more about history.
I got married there. It is a nice place to visit if you are into that sort of thing.
The oldest church in the United States founded by the English, St. Luke's dates to 1632. It has served as a church, a courthouse, and as shelter for soldiers during the Civil War. Horses were even sheltered inside during bad storms during wartime.
Graves in the cemetery date to the early 1700's, including one minister who once dove through a...
History to be absorbed and appreciated, tour guide was excellent
Beautiful church and cemetery. Very nice and informative guide...
Was certainly worth the $5 fee - which goes to the upkeep of this lovely church..
My partner and I took "the long way home" and stopped through Smithfield, VA after a weekend trip to VA Beach. We saw St. Luke's Church advertised as a place to visit and decided to check it out. We arrived just 10 minutes before closing (unbeknown to us) and they didn't skip a beat in offering to stay late so...
