Buried within historic Riverview, this family owned bakery has amassed an eclectic clientele over its decades of operation. Customers don't come for ambience--considering the...
This place is incredible. I ordered a pastrami sandwich it was literally the size of my head, and it was only half a sandwich! Food here is phenomenal...
They sell commercial cakes from an offsite bakery that taste and smell like refrigerator. Not sure what they are baking there but it isn't cakes. I ordered...
Horrible pastry, artificial whipped cream, inedible and stale mousse cake at $10.50 per slice. Eclair was just 3 inches long, dry, stale icky per my Mom...
This place is a trip. I bought two bowls (small bowls) of chile for like $28 dollars. I don't know why. It was almost like going to watch Starwars 1. You know it's awful but you feel you owe it to...
We love the French Bakery. The pastrami sandwich is absolutely THE BEST. Any & all their pastries and desserts are beyond words g.r.e.a.t !!! And, don't miss their coffee. You must have their...
Super overprice. Would not recommend unless you have a lot of $$$ to give away for mediocre food and service
Pastrami was good but everything was crazy overpriced. It was $46 for 2 small sandwiches, 2 waters and 2 pastries.
Being from the North, I hold delicatessen places that say they have pastrami sandwiches to a pretty high standard. Let me just say, I was NOT disappointed. The bread was amazing, there was just the right amount of mustard. The tomato, pickle and onion flavors were pronounced but not overpowering and the pastrami wa...s absolutely amazing. I bought some pastries to go along with my sandwich. The...
One of the best sandwich shops in norfolk. My first time here had the seafood sub and pastrami sub...OUTSTANDING!!!! Don't miss this place it's a very special place. Has that good warm feeling.
if you like to go out and eat and feel screwed when leave then this is the place for you! if not steer clear.
I remember I was driving by and I say the big sign that said French Bakery and I literally did a U-turn. The staff was amazingly knowledgeable, plenty of locals stopping by. The food was simply...
$9.50 for a grease laden "fresh" fig apple peach tart...espresso was not bad for small cup $4.50. Owner kept trying to sell perserves and last package of fresh figs...even after I politely said maybe later. Personally not my cup of tea..er..coffee.
In the early 70's my hubby & I would stop at the French Bakery for sweets before our visit to the Zoo. I was much surprised to discover- ( we live in Northern Chesapeake) they are still open and still make the same beloved Orange donuts.
Orange donuts are deliciously sweet & huge! And yeah- expect to pay more than...
Best pastrami sandwiche! And the Croissant Donut with cinnamon & sugar is top notch, as well as the chocolate covered bacon ;)
We ordered oyster stew, sandwiches, creme horns and fruit cake $110
Ok to pay if good
Oyster stew 2 oysters plus full of bread soaked in milk
Pastrami was fatty and average
Saving the fruitcake for later
Creme horn filling tasted like wedding cake frosting
Won't be back
But if you are interested in quirky good food, pricey, in a funky, throw-back little place... it is a must. Norfolk native and haven't been? Shame on you!
Order the soup - whatever it is that day... and try it out. Have fun and engage the owner. He is a hoot!
Inclined to complain? Do yourself a favor and don't...
Ok, that was the best I can say. Good, not great and certainly NOT worth what we paid. I was craving a French horn.....but $7.50 for a French horn that didnt have pastry cream, but more of a shortening buttercream filling. My friend went with me who is a trained chef and owned a bakery before moving to Pa. She...
Bought an cocconut chocolate pastry. Clerk - the owner - put apple pie filling on it. Really??? This seems like a bakery from outer space. OMG -what planet is he from. And unbelievely pricey. Mind boggling awful!!!
A single small chicken salad sandwich came to $12. No sides, no drink, just a sandwich, wrapped in wax paper, stuffed into a small brown sack. There is nothing to excuse the outrageous prices. This is not fine dining, but he seems to think it is with the prices. They would probably be very busy if they lowered their prices....
I really enjoyed their chicken salad and pastrami sandwiches. The actual seating space is small but adequate. I usually order my sandwiches to go.
Before dining at a nearby restaurant recently, we stopped in to pick up a little desert for "later". The owner Eli is extremely proud of his product and has no problem telling you that all is products are scratch made and he cannot compete with the mass bakeries that serve the Costcos and Sam's Clubs of the world. He bluntly...
The Best Kosher food south of NYC! Fabulous Pastrami, corned beef...the bread alone is worth the trip! The pastries are made in house and are so good - house special orange doughnuts are Not To Be Missed. The owner pushes a special or two, and brings samples to the table...if you have to ask what it costs, don't do it....
I stopped in for a birthday lunch with a friend. I had always been curious about this place. I had the pastrami and it was to die for. We both had orange donuts and the owner offered to heat them up in the oven for us. Yum. This is a unique establishment. I have heard about negative experiences here, but...
I visited this bakery prior to Christmas to pick up a few dessert items for the holiday. It was my first time there. I decided to visit since I was meeting folks for lunch and I was early and had time to kill.
Although the bakery items were tasty, They were not worth the $70.00 I paid for a few...
The Pastrami sandwich is unique and awesome. You’re not going to find this one anywhere else! Every now and then I get the medium Roast Pork on the soft bread. The pork roast is cooked there in the back, not pre-packaged; if you get the small sandwich you’ll be sorry unless you’re saving room for one of the “REAL CUSTARD”...
The bars on the windows and unsavory appearance is extremely deceiving. The food is first class. This place is run by a Lebanese family who make the best baklava I have ever had, and i have lived in Turkiye this past year and a half, a couple of hours away from the purported birthplace of baklava, Gaziantep. The portions are HUGE,...
This place has been in Norfolk for decades. My first time there, I was by myself and ended up being the only person in there. The owner, Eli, made me a pastrami sandwich and a Napoleon and actually sat with me to chat while I had lunch. Super nice guy. We talked about the history of his family's restaurant and...
If you like REAL french bread made by a third generation artisan you will enjoy the French Bakery and Deli! It's a little pricey, but everything is made fresh, including the to-die-for fig and apple turnovers (using local figs, literally from a tree a few blocks away!). Not elegant, very simple place, but wonderful food!
Great donuts but they go fast so get there early
My mother always said if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything. BUT, she also said, ""Always tell the truth"". Well, I am here to tell you the truth. This is by far the worst representation of an authentic french bakery I have ever experienced. It's just like Paris. Yep......Paris, Texas! Definitely not Paris, France! (Except the rudeness!)
Save your money and get a sandwich from another metropolitan restaurant. Definitely DO NOT indulge in the extremely overpriced mediocre patries! Just not worth it! This place is downright insulting!
You've got to be kidding me! ...

The food is above average but the prices are WAAAAY too high. My husband and I each got a small sandwich, chips, bottled soda & a dessert and we spent over $40!!! How have these guys not priced themselves out of business?! I'm all for supporting local business but we will not be returning.
I have driven by this place a few times and decided to pull on over on a Saturday morning to try out a pastry. I walk in, no one at the counter, the pastry case is dark and I hear arguing from the back..okay, rough morning? I wait a few minutes, pace around, maybe they will see me? Finally a...
Every donut is a treasure and priced as such. I live their turkey sandwich with secret sauce. Not much atmosphere but do far from a chain that it us quaint. It us also dark, expensive, and hard to spot.
This place is a complete disgrace regarding "French Bakery". The items in the display case looked old and a mess. It looked like everything was dumped on the tray with no care. There were cakes with strawberries on the verge of rotting, they probably were made at the time of his grand father. We bought a coconut bar to try...
My dad took me to this old place over 40 years ago for lunch and I kept coming back A lyrical pastrami sandwich on a home made roll - which is still available today. And it really is a wonderful sandwich.
BUT. READ ON.
I took my Mom there for lunch one recent Saturday. She was excited to go back...
We were on our way to the Chrysler Museum for the day and were intrigued byt the small shop with the sign "French Bakery". Craving a chololate croissant and latte, we decided to stop. At first glance after stepping inside, I wondered if they were actually still in business. The place was barren with only a few items in the...
Tasty. But I kept looking behind the counter, expecting to see the Eiffel tower. Because, with these kind of prices, you would expect to be in Paris. ($40 for a small chocolate pie!)(Yes, American…
We actually went here for the first time years ago when we first moved to Norfolk. I was expecting a real French Bakery, but there's nothing "French" about it. We ordered the pastrami sandwiches which were tasty, but not good enough for the price.
It was during the holiday season and they were pushing their fruitcakes. The owner asked me...
I'm a bit surprised by the negative reviews here; I've always been happy with the food quality here, though I do agree the food is overpriced. The timeworn decor, in my opinion, adds to the charm of…
Lot's of people say this place is overpriced. I say you get what you pay for. The pastrami sandwich is, hands down the BEST sandwich I have ever put in my mouth. And guess what? I don't really like sandwiches! I'm much more of a salad girl.
Sure, the owner is a character. I dare say he'd play better to a Northern audience, Brooklyn say, or Jersey. But life's a lot more interesting with a few characters in it.
I say go. Go eat the sandwich. Be brave.

It's an experience. I've been here repeatedly over the past 7 years when I visit my family in the area. George always remembers me, comments that I've somehow lost weight since he's last seen me and…
Best Sandwich Ever. My god....I expect a 15.00 lunch to usually not be worth that much...but the Regular Pastrami sandwich here is the best sandwich in Hampton Roads if not Virginia...Just to let you know, it does get pricey...The large sandwich, which can feed 2 hungry people, is 23.00...BUT IT IS WORTH IT!!!
Stale. Went here with a couple friends for lunch. Sandwiches and deserts for three people and it was well over $50, no joke.
Bad Business Practice. I went into this shop today and was rewarded with a large and delicious sandwich. The owner sat down and talked awhile, and I mentioned several times it was my first time in his deli. Amazing, delicious sandwich, cost $9.95 plus tax. I don't mind spending for something that tasty and I would gladly have recommended this place to friends. However, when it came time to pay,...
Bought espresso here once. It did what I wanted, i.e. gave me a shot of caffeine, but that's the best thing I can say about the place. The whole restaurant seemed dirty, dingy, and disorganized. I…
Overrated, overpriced, under flavored. That pretty much summarizes this place. Honestly, we were super excited to find a "New York Style" deli here in Norfolk and decided to give it a try. When we…
Took three of the family, and split the largest pastrami sandwich on advice of the owner, about $21,and it was great. The friendly owner then sat down with us, asked us where we lived, and after determining we were not Ghent residents started suggesting upgrades regarding dessert, and thats when the thieving began. The slice of cake he suggested, then the half pie tin of cake to go brought the bill to over $73. The guy ringing this up looked uncomfortable, expecting a blowup probably, so they've run this schtick on others they don't think they will ever see again. Thing is, I AM a local...

NO! DO NOT GO HERE! And please allow me to offer my opinion as to why. First, it's not the quality of the food that prompted me to give this establishment the LOWEST rating in my portfolio, but…
Ridiculously overpriced! I tried this place for breakfast with my mom, just hoping for a few nice pastries. Ended up spending $27 for a french horn ($7.50) and two chocolate mousse cups ($6.50 A…
We came here for lunch one Saturday. The pastrami sandwich was really good, but not $12 good. We wanted to get eclairs for desert but were shocked that ONE eclair costs $10, yes $10 for one eclair. The owner said that its because "using all natural ingredients is expensive", yeah right. Deserts did not look fresh and even cookies cost...
Haven't been back to George's since I left ODU in 1972. We always visited as...
too expensive.
We got 3 doughnuts which were cold as if they had been frozen and 2 apple turnovers. We were shocked when the bill came to $20. We didnt enjoy the breakfast. We were disappointed and wont return.
Never tried bakery items, but the best hot pastrami sandwich in Hampton Roads.
Don't let the neighborhood and the interior fool u it us hands down the BEST...
They still give out pieces of homemade do-nuts like George did when we were...
I've eaten at the French Bakery for over 20 years now and in that time, I've never found anything that has even come close to compare. If you are a penny pincher, steer clear. Chances are your niggardly ways will completely distract you from the pure edible ecstasy. For anyone else: just try it. Words cannot describe what it is you're in for.
Pros
+ Best Food Ever.
Cons
- It is a bit pricy but what do you expect for the best.

WHAT?. The idea that this is a "french" bakery is laughable. Sandwich shop at its finest, but nothing more. Go in expecting to pick up a few brioches, and a baguette, and you will leave disappointed.

I visited Norfolk 2 years ago and a friend brought me a pastrami sandwich, we sat back and ate this and it was the best thing I ever ate. It was made from a full loaf of bread and piled high with cooked pastrami, onions, tomato's, mustard, and a black pepper based mixture. Too finish it off, an orange donut.
I just came back to Norfolk and my friend popped in to say ""hi"". It was 4pm and I wanted a pastrami sandwich, he said we have to hurry since it closes at 5.
We drove past the zoo, and a few questionable neighborhoods when we parked in front of an older place with bars on the front....

Just moved around the corner and had read previous reviews of this place. I became more and more intrigued with each passing of the bakery/deli. I just tried the pastrami sandwich and soup of day (unnamed). They were both simple and delicious. I wouldn't even consider myself a pastrami fan in the least, but this was extremely delicious. I could...
We decided on a whim to check out this delicatessen hoping to relive our experience with French patisseries while living overseas. For a moment I was hoping to hear ""Bon Jour"" from behind the counter but rather got a stare from a man who didn't seem quite glad to see us. We perused the selection of pastries and chose two almond crescent, chocolate mousse cigar, and a fruit cake. The man then pointed out that the pastries cost $6-7 each and the small fruit cake was $30. We almost fell over and settled on one each of the pastries and the cake. Our bill came to $48.50. They were good...

My brother and I were on Granby street and decided to check out the "" french bakery "" and we were excited because we heard all these fantastic things about this place. First, we parked on a dangerously busy highway with traffic that was never ending. Once we walked into this bakery, we were greeted by this short angry man who ask what did we want ? We told him we were here because we heard so many good things about this place and wanted to try it out for ourselves. My brother wanted a creamhorn and the owner told us that he makes the entire thing from scratch and told us that all the...

I have been disappointed again and again by Norfolk's ""Best"". I went to the French Bakery on a recommendation. I'll gladly pay 48 bucks for a couple of awsome sandwiches rather go to someplace that has high prices but average service and food. When I left the French Bakery all I could think about was how happy I was and how I couldn't wait to go back. If you want to be ripped off go down to 200- 400 block of Granby you'll end up leaving with poor service, lousy food and a high bill. If you want to save money cook at home. The area that the restuarant is located is a fine area. ...

I'm stunned that anyone even knows about this place. It's a hole in the wall. I live here and I never hear anyone mention it. But I've been there and the pastrami is amazing. Truly amazing. The place is not cheap. And the baked goods are hit or miss. But the pastrami--I've never had anything like it.
this is a hole in the wall place but so so so good. they have lunch sandwitches that are great. the desserts are to dir for. u got to try it!
I got ripped off so bad I will never go back. Two small turkey sandwiches, some orange donuts, and an eclair cost over $48.00. I've been a customer off and on for 30+ years but this was the last time! An eclair at Bakers Crust is $3.99. To my surpirse they charged me over $9.00 and tried to defend that price by saying a large one was $11 something. $1.95 for an orange donut and $0.90 for a bag of chips that is clearly labeled $0.75. Added $2.50 per sanwdich because I asked for extra condiments (sauce, pickles, that kind of stuff). Another customer/friend of the owners was there to...

best chicken salad or pastrami anywhere - bring your wallet, though.
Having heard about this locals only ""little gem"" I made a visit and came up with the following. Highly overrated and highly over priced. The taste and texture of the pastrami sandwich can be found across the street at Tabb's Restaurant for far less money. Sandwiches that are 6 inches long run between 9 and 11 dollars and donuts start at $1.65 each. No break for buying a dozen. Although the orange donuts were excellent (wonderful flavor and texture) and definitly worth a second visit I can't bring myself to pay that kind of money. Too bad they aren't more realistic in their pricing; they...

Good food. Ugly place. Strange owners. Whenever they notice that you constantly buy from them they change the price. There are no written prices and usually you don't get receipt back. Very expensive.
get the pastrami
My husband had visited this restaurant and wanted to take me to sample their amazing sandwiches. Not being a pastrami sandwich kinda gal, I said "no" to pastrami and instead ordered a homemade chicken salad sandwich and promised to try my husband's sandwich. Well, when the owner (and other reviewers here) said that "this is not your average pastrami" they...
Took a special side trip to check out this place based on a review here...... It was excellent and kinda old world. Owner waited on me and fixed me a tremendous pastrami sandwich. I got the small, can't imagine the large. It was enough for two meals for me. Very nice person and told me some of the history. Don't...
A dear friend of mine lives in Norfolk, so I frequently visit the city. In this city of many great restaurants, I always make time to visit the French Bakery, a business that has served Norfolk since 1912. The business is a family affair, and I always look forward to seeing the owner or his charming wife. After your first...
I found very little ?French? about this bakery. It reminded me more of a dirty ristorante in the touristy parts of Rome. Thinking we might find a buche de Noel (yule log), and perhaps some nice pastries for our 4 o'clock, we headed down to this underwhelming establishment in an unlikely neighborhood, where the owner feels the need for iron bars on the windows.
The large, mustachioed man behind the counter was curt and unhelpful. We asked about their yule logs, and were shown a lop-sided cake and told a 1/3 of it would run us nearly $40. (We reflected on it, and later called to cancel the...

Longtime Norfolk shop serves up high-end European pastries and deli sandwiches in a casual atmosphere. – In ShortBuried within historic Riverview, this family owned bakery has amassed an eclectic clientele over its decades of operation. Customers don't come for ambience--considering the small, dusty interior with worn burgundy seated stools assembled around worn wooden tables--they come for the hard-to-find Grade A pastrami sandwiches and the popular roast pork sandwiches. For dessert, the made-from-scratch almond elephant ears or custard filled chocolate eclairs can be perfectly paired...

This is one of the best places in town to get a sandwich - if you can afford it. Sandwiches are big, but pricey; loyal customers swear that they are some of the best in Norfolk. Customers can also purchase excellent bread, pastries and cakes from the bakery. It is not necessarily authentic French baking but it is a good American substitute. Call for opening hours.
