Fairgrounds is a place that my husband & I enjoy coming to! During the school year we came every weekend & got our school work done for the week. Now that we are on summer break we come to relax & unwind! We enjoy our time together! We bring our laptops or paperback books with us. It is a relaxing atmosphere & we have recommended the place to other friends.

Wonderful coffee selections in a local owned business

Wide range of selection, fantastic frozen coffee drinks, patient baristas. This is clearly a local hangout place. There is a Starbucks on the opposite corner (who thought that was a good idea???) and we love Starbucks when traveling, but this place is so much better! even the board you chose your drink from was much easier to chose from. I...

It’s got an awesome eclectic atmosphere.  They also host events so it’s a great place to check out what’s going on in the local area.  Nice selection of fair trade coffee, tea, and other tasty treats.  Now, there’s no credit card minimums.  Elliot’s Fair Grounds is also open later than some other places. Hours: Sun: 8am-10pm Mon-Thurs- 6am-11pm Fri-Sat:...

This is a REAL coffee shop! Not like that fake substitue accross the street (starbucks). I've been to coffee shops all over the country and this is a very good one. If you like good coffee, charming atmosphere, good pastries and sandwiches, and fair prices... this is your place. If you like coffee flavored drinks or inferior coffee beans sold at "good stuff" prices, then starbucks is accross...

I love Elliot's Fair Grounds!! It is a major gathering place for everyone in the Ghent, Norfolk community - from college students to moms with kids. There is a relaxed, home-like atmosphere, with big comfy chairs, tables, and plenty of outlets for laptops. Bring your homework, work assignments, or a good book and enjoy the drinks, food, and free wifi!...

We came in and were totally indecisive, so the girl at the counter told us what to order - and she was right! I liked the atmosphere, and that they have board games (though not great ones). I tried this awesome hot chocolate concoction which included mint, white chocolate, and dark chocolate. I also got a (vegan) apple strudel, which was good. Cool place!

Uncomfortable Seating & No Product Support

I have reviewed this restaurant before. Since coming under new ownership I was hoping it would improve. With the coffee/tea supplier now being the owner there has been a notable drop if product support to the point where over 1/2 of the choices are minimally available. The seating is still worn-out and either in need or refurbishing or replacing. Usually...

Changing of Hands

With the new ownership, the cafe is having difficulty keeping a current supply of coffee stock, leaving it unable to offer various drinks that customers request. Also, the shift to 'vegan' pastries leaves something to be desired in items with a pallitable taste.
The cafe would do better if it also offered a few selections for sandwiches and possibly even...

Why bother? Not worth it!. Boy, what a disappointment. I bypassed Starbuck's across the street to try this place since I had not been to Elliot's in over a year. I won't go back.

Nice locally-owned coffeehouse. The extra-cool art gallery below is owned by the same couple. There are pros and cons, though.
On the up side, coffee is good, food is pretty good with vegan options, staff is usually nice, and the bathroom is usually pretty clean. The down side is that other than really early in the morning, the place is...

Yelp

Reading the negative reviews on service makes me feel super likeable b-c they are super nice to me here. Everything a coffee shop should be, but probably not the place for yuppies in hurries.

Yelp

It actually feels like a coffee shop. It's a great combo of amazing coffee and relaxing atmosphere. You'll definitely love it if you're a coffee lover!Their frozen mochas are so good.

Yelp

Anti-everything. One of the places that wants you to spend $20 or something to use a debit card. Annoying. Also, I overheard the baristas saying that they were paid on the waitress scale (don't know if it was a ploy to get tips or what) but if that is true, that is absurd ($2.45 an hour I think).

Yelp

Fair Grounds stays true to what a coffeehouse should be, a place where you want to stay a while and kick back with a more social and cultural vibe than Starbucks (across the street). Yes, you can do…

It seems like a place from the beatnik era. I hate coffee but I hear only good things. I just go for the social quirkiness of it all. Music, poetry, politics, the international newspapers, the wifi, book loans or just a place to relax with a literate mix of locals and visitors. College students, street philosophers, sailors... All are part...

Could be great

Average Rating

I love Fair Grounds, and I go there often but the frequently obnoxious and loud bunch of teeny boppers on the outdoor patio, especially after the shop downstairs closes, will send me away if some crowd control doesnt happen in the very near future.

Pros

+ atmosphere, wireless internet, great coffee

Cons

- , too limited menu, accessibility

Quaint Coffeehouse

This cute little coffeehouse sits above an art gallery. The fireplace warms the general seating area that is furnished with comfortable living room furniture that you would expect to find in your rich uncle's house. The crowd is anywhere from student, to grunge, to lawyer. It's a great place to warm up in Ghent.

Pros

+ Atmosphere, Price, Decor

Cons

- Seating
