Many believe that Abe Doumar, founder of Doumar's Cones & Barbecue, gave the world its first ice cream cone. Doumar was a traveling salesman retailing paperweights at the famous St. Louis World's Fair in 1904. When an ice cream seller exhausted his stock of paper dishes to hold the ice creams, he got a nearby waffle maker to roll his waffles into cones and thus invented the waffle cone. While...

It provides sliced barbecue, hamburgers, cheeseburgers, steaks, pork rolls, hot dogs and grilled cheese. Doumar's Cones & Barbecue s...

The Doumar Family In 1907, Abe Doumar's first Ice Cream Cone Stand in Norfolk was in Ocean View Amusement Park. Albert and his brother Vic Doumar managed the current location for many years. Today, Albert still bakes cones...

After he introduced the world to its first ice-cream cone at the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis, Abe Doumar founded this drive-in institution in 1934. It's still operated by his family. Waitresses carry to your car the specialties of the house: barbecue, limeade, and ice cream in waffle cones made according to an original recipe. For breakfast, try the Egg-O-Doumar, a bargain at $3.60. The Food...

Open since 1934, this is the country's oldest drive-in and a national landmark. Nostalgia buffs will be drawn to the orange awning outside and orange vinyl stools and booths inside, not to mention the carhops, some of whom have been here…

The birthplace of the ice cream cone brings your meals on a tray while you sit in your car.

Finally, some people see beyond all the ranting and raving. I frankly don't see why Doumar's is as popular as it is. The barbecue is completely bland. There is absolutely NO way they smoke the meat on premises; there is no smoke flavor, no bark--in fact, the meat tastes like it is purchased in bulk from a food service that knows nothing about proper barbecue. That aside, I've been here on three occasions; each time it was virtually impossible to get the attention of a very inattentive staff. I will NEVER go back here AGAIN.

My hubby stopped at this place due to a few of our friend's recommendations. We tried the pulled pork sandwhich, order of fries, and butter pecan ice cream cone. The sandwhich wasn't bad but we didnt get the extra condiments (bbq sauce, we didnt know you had to ask for) so it was just okay. The meat was very juicy and tender. The fries were typical fries. The ice cream was amazing! My husband had also got a triple thick strawberry shake. This shakes isnt a typical shake. So if you order it, be prepared to eat with a spoon.

Pros

+ Ice cream, excellent service, cheap eats

Cons

- Greasy food

I can remember going there as a kid and eating, just as much as I go now. I don't know how long it has been around, but it is still just a good.\r
I recommend the "Vanilla Reggie" which is a thick Vanilla icecream with the cone ground…

The SceneRich in history and tradition, this national landmark has been making waffle cones since 1934. Owner Abe Doumar created the first waffle cone in 1904 for the St. Louis Exposition. Curbside service is reminiscent of "Happy Days," although the waitstaff does not wear roller skates. Diners also have the option of bellying up to the soda counter or one of the tables inside. The FoodPeople...

Doumar's has been a family tradition since the 70s. My mother went as a teenager when she was at Granby. In the 80s my mom and dad went there for dates. 90s and beyond were the child years for my sister and I. Now that I can drive and attend Granby, its like deja vu all over agina. I love Doumar's!!!!

After growing up with Doumar's (couldn't wait until my parents would take me there as a child and later driving myself in High School), I returned everytime I came back to visit the Norfolk area! I have taken my husband and all of my children there! Never will be any better ice cream and cones - never will be any better limeade! I have fond memories of the old cone making machine that has been in the front for years! Doumar's is the best excuse for: ""There's no place like home!""

We LOVE Doumar's!!! I have been going there for BBQ and ice cream since I was a little kid. Now I take my 3 kids there for the same. They love it just as much as I do. The cones are made fresh every morning by the owner, who has to be at least 80. Now that is dedication!!!
