"Come hungry" - the portions are "theatrically humongous" - to this "family-style" Italian in Penn Quarter/Chinatown where the "tasty" dishes include "plentiful" pastas and "wonderful" meatballs; though the "loud", "roomy" space may feel "like eating at a theme restaurant in an amusement park", it's still "fun with a large group."

Carmine's Restaurant Review

Old-fashioned looking (a little like Nonna's kitchen) Carmine’s can seat up to 700 people and offers attentive and speedy service --- and all the food is made from scratch. For example, the cooks boil veal bones for hours to make the stock for the Marsala sauce that converts plain chicken cutlets into a succulent treat. Indeed, even the breads --- don’t skip the ciabatta --- are made fresh as...

Carmine’s has been a New York City staple for decades, and now the team that pioneered the rise of homestyle Italian (call it ‘the macaroni revolution’) has brought an outpost to Washington, D.C....

Dimly lit and cozy, with Sinatra playing. Warm interior if you're looking to escape the D.C cold as we were. The portions are large and served family style. 1 entree feeds 4, which makes this...

Authentic Italian food in Family style portions. Entrees, appetizers, sides, and desserts all served in portions that feed 3-5. That means the cost per person is super reasonable for groups of 4 or more.

We had 20 people--adults and kids--to celebrate 2 birthdays and 1 anniversary. We had several appetizers, main courses and 2 desserts. Nobody walked out hungry and everyone rolled out happy. Good service, too. Very loud place.

If we were to summarize Carmine's, it's Buca di Beppo portions of much higher quality food. They have house-made pasta (AND they have house-made gluten free pasta, which is even better) and every dish that comes out seems to have that authentic Italian taste to...

Very pleased with our latest visit. We always ask to be seated at Doc’s table - he’s attentive, has excellent recommendations, and puts up with our banter. No matter how carefully we plan, we always order too much, but that makes for excellent leftovers. We...

Carmines offers very good Italian food family style. One platter will feed four to six people. The fun is passing around the platters, family style and savoring the very good food. For six people, a salad platter and one or possibly two entrees would be...

Fancy dinner

Reception in the Kennedy Caucus room and dinner family style with the MO Coalition of Behavioral Health contingent, about 30 of us! Love this city!

With some really amazing young people!

Dinner was at the world famous Carmine's and was scrumptious!

Great birthday dinner!!! Happy birthday Mike!!! Michael Kelsey

This is a restaurant for large groups to eat family style. It's good, but it is not high end regional Italian. It is out of New York City. It's the only restaurant I know of that has a fridge for customers, so if leave your leftovers here (you will have plenty), see your show at Verizon Center, and then come back for them.

Get your group of friends ready because it’s time you made reservations at Carmine’s in Penn Quarter . This traditional Italian restaurant proves there is most certainly a place in Washington, DC for good family-style cuisine. With 700 seats, Carmine’s appears as a larger version of a restaurant from the classic Godfather movies, but in this town it’s more likely you’ll hear whispers of a...

My first visit

I loved my food and the employees were extremely nice. I never knew Bo-Dogs existed. I will definitely visit again and recommend to others.

Arrived with three other people before the rush so food arrived fairly quickly. Wait staff was very pleasant and knowledgeable.

Enjoyed angel hair pasta with marinara. Sauce was rich and very tomato-y. I would have it again. Sausages were juicy with a touch of fennel seed, as I like them. Salad was excellent also.

If your looking for a delicious Italian meal and are not annoyed by slow service, I highly recommend. One tip though, we walked in and were told it was a 45 minute wait so for hahas we made a reservation online and were seated in 15 minutes!!!! We knew it was our online reservation being called when they used our last name for the reservation which we did not give to the hostess!!!!

Excellent addition to Penn Quarter for both tourists and locals. Food was tasty and plentiful as per previous reviews. Lunch for 4 with a glass of wine each was only $20 a head, great deal. Only improvement would have been a more attentive and enthusiastic server...he needed some NYC energy!

I was worried Carmine's would be "big-boxy" and the food boring. But it was wonderful! Penne with vodka sauce and meatballs were fabulous. Also shrimp Diavlo with angle hair was amazing. The shrimp scampi did come out ice cold, but they comped if off our bill and we had plenty of other food to eat. If you are in the mood for traditional Italian cooking and you have a group to feed, Carmine's is...

A friend and I had dinner at Carmine's on a Friday night and only had to wait about 30 minutes to be seated. Watching the plates go by as we waited was an experience in itself...the meatballs are the size of tennis balls! Italian restaurant thinks big -- in many ways By Tom Sietsema October 24, 2010 The woman at the table next to mine at Carmine's gasps when her lunch is set before her. What they do they do very well.. this is a terrific basic italian american meal, served family style. The food is the good old pasta and meatballs. but blows away all the other family style italian spots.. This one does it and does it right.. The Eggplant is a knock out..
