Whether you want to buy fresh fish to cook at home or have someone else do the work for you, BlackSalt offers you this choice. This DC restaurant stars the freshest seafood on the market, and if you choose to eat in, lets you sample Neptune’s best in some mighty interesting guises. Surely freshly shucked oysters at noontime or later any of the tapas-style small plates (fried Ipswich clams,...
The breads with olive oil were a great start., and their cocktails were creative and good. As an appetizer we shared a goat cheese flan with prosciutto, and greens and nice bread, but the flan just didn't have much taste. The crab cakes were full...
We saw a review of this restaurant on a local PBS show and really wanted to try it for the fresh seafood.
We went with 4 friends on a Sunday afternoon not realizing that it was brunch. We were so pleasantly surprised. I had an...
We had flounder the last time we ate. It was vey fresh and very tasting. We have been here several times, the service is also very good. In addition, we love the market, which offers a good variety of products.
Excellent dinner. Sardines were wonderful - probably the best part of the meal. Clam chowder was good, but not the best I've ever had.
On a personal family dinner mid week, so we chose BlackSalt on MacArthur Blvd. Fun area of town about 10 minutes from Georgetown, and the whole experience was delightful. BlackSalt is part seafood market, part seated restaurant, and part bar. We sat in the restaurant...
Nothing exciting on the outside and not near Georgetown. As you enter you see the fish heads in the case and so wasn't sure but had such a great experience. Got placed in a back room, we were a table of 6 and it was...
Although the drive was a distance from where we were staying, it was completely worth it. The oysters, crab cakes, and key lime pie were excellent. The extensive wine list and the knowledgable wine director completed our meal. The service was careful and guide us...
My brother, his wife, my wife and friends took me out for my 75th birthday. We went to the Black Salt Fish Market & Restaurant in DC. This was BY FAR the BEST meal I have had in DC and likely anywhere!
The food was...
I have had my fair share of Clam Chowder in my day but I have never had chowder quite like what they serve at BlackSalt. We were told it has vermouth in it which explains the slight bitterness. It was fantastic and with a generous...
I think the happy hour is a great deal, but getting more and more difficult to find a place to sit. The reason is that the restaurant is expensive and the happy hour deals are great. MAybe they should consider some less pricy alternates to...
Amazing service, amazing food. Great drinks. They pay attention to details
Lackluster service. From the greeting upon entering, through to the waitress who was unwelcoming and had the friendliness of a NJ diner waitress.
Fantastic food, didn't care how much I spent. It was that good, my wife and I will be back soon.
Dinner in Valentines night was packed but the experience was still extraordinary. Food and service all went very smoothly and we never felt rushed!
From the time we sat down until the time we left, we felt as if we were royalty. Very attentive service, the food was delicious, and the presentation was outstanding. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to my friends - it is a gem in the Washington, DC area! Thank you for providing an outstanding experience and I look forward to returning to Black Salt again.
Always amazing food. Pricey and small portions, but worth it! Every dish is better than the next!
We have been going to Blacksalt for many years for special events such as birthdays, anniversaries, and just with friends. We have been to happy hour many times. All of our dining events have been great. The best fresh fish, mussels, side dishes and pairing wines. This is our "Go To Place" to enjoy a great dinner or lunch or happy hour. BlackSalt has never failed us.
The appetizer options were more appealing than entree options. I did not enjoy my meal unfortunately as it was too salty. The rest of my party enjoyed but no one would make a second trip.
Have dined here often. Food and service are almost always excellent. On this occasion, as has happened one or twice before, two very loud tables nearby in the back (quieter and more decorous) room made our conversation impossible, so we had to ask to move to the usually noisier front room. Staff was most accommodating and apologetic. Once shifted, we enjoyed the meal.
One of if not the best fish restaurant in Washington DC. A place to return to.
We came all the way from Brooklyn to dine at Black Salt. It's my third visit and it was as wonderful as the last two times. We had a lovely, quiet table away from the chatty Saturday night crowd, and it was fun to watch all the action while neatly tucked away. The Blue Point oysters were nicely presented and fresh, fresh, briny, delicious, fresh! The fried Ipswich clams were perfectly crispy...
We have never had a bad meal here. We come back often and try new things. Never fails us
As usual, excellent food, service and ambiance. Blacksalt us a treasure for diners on the east coast!
Delightful. Food, Service, Ambience. Great neighborhood restaurant where business comes to make deals.
There isn't any special accommodation they can't or won't meet. Freshest fish grilled for lunch with simple veggies is as good as the fish tacos. A great treat every time.
Tried for restaurant week and everything was fantastic. Seafood restaurant but even the burger was exceptional!
As usual we enjoyed the seafood at Black Salt. The food was well cooked and the dessert was vey nice. The only problem was the wait between courses which was inordinately long.
I have frequented this restaurant many times and have always enjoyed it. I didn't enjoy the food for brunch today and very much disliked how our waiter would lean on my chair and my belongings every time he came around. I counted at least 5 times and the table sitting next to us also didn't like how he was doing that to them. Doesn't feel like an upscale restaurant anymore.
The octopus appetizer was terrific, but the bouillabaisse was really bland. I would recommend the restaurant but not that main course.
Delicious food. We sat in the back room and it would have been nice to have soft music piped in. It was almost too quiet.
I thought for what you got it was fabulously overpriced. We mentioned to the waiter that we were not in a hurry. I guess he decided that he didn't have to be attentive. We waited 20 minutes for cocktails. Granted, it was Saturday night but nothing out of the ordinary was ordered. Throughout the night there were long pauses before he reappeared. He was nice enough and certainly knowledgeable but...
Terrific food. Excellent service; perfect size portions!
Wonderful food and great service made this a great restaurant. We will be back! We went off the menu to have the butterfish which was fantastic. The staff made us feel comfortable. We sat in the back dining room which had a different vibe compared to the main dining area. The evening started off quiet and the sound grew as more tables were filled but it never reached the level of the main room.
I go to this restaurant quite often and the food never disappointed me. This last time it was Restaurant Week and the food was so good that I went twice!
One of our favorite spots! The back room is great, (behind the wine room). Cozy, nice feel. Fresh seafood, and of course, amazing oysters on the half-shell for happy hour!!
Food was very good, room is noisy, service was ok but too many tables for one waiter so patience is required. Back room is nice but very cold every time someone opened the door
The food was absolutely delicious and very consistent. If you want outstanding, fresh seafood, then look no more!
One of our favorite "go to" restaurants. The food and service never disappoint. Love how it goes from the fish market up front, and progressively fancier, to the quiet wine room dining experience in the back. Servers are always happy to customize ingredients based on dietary sensitivities and preferences. Some of the best fresh fish and seafood in town!
From the Open Table website I had understood Black Salt was participating in Restaurant week for dinner also, but it was not the case. I prefer this restaurant for lunch. Bwonderful fresh seafood.
Enjoyed the atmosphere and excellent service. Try the rockfish, nicely plated.
My food looked and tasted great. I had the best waiter in the building.
My Neighborhood go to seafood market (and restaurant). Unfortunately service was not as friendly and accommodating today for lunch. Hopefully this was just a one off.
It was my 1st time here and i will return! Food was good.
The wait staff was very attentive to our needs and requests. Extremely knowledgeable about the menu.
Outstanding meal. If you like fish, you'll love this place.
Bread basket terrific. Fried clams yummy, albeit tad salty. Bronzino and sea bass excellent. Very expensive including the wine.
Great restaurant -- just a bit too precious -- upsize your portions maybe 10 - 20%
outstanding chef. a top restaurant. Mussels are great. Salads and desserts were tremendous.
Excellent! The food was unusual and tasty, the drinks very special, and our server was wonderful.
Another hit from the Black's organization. great atmosphere, feeling is that you are treated as guests not diners.
Nice ambiance. Horrible location to those in Prince George County. Mediocre food. Attractive Happy Hour. Lackluster drinks. Great Customer Service. Tricky Parking. Not easy to locate. Not metro accessible. I rather have a V8.
Black Salt, I just want to say I love you. I would like to curl up at your happy hour with your amazing appetizers every night of the week. I would like to have a permanent relationship with your crabcakes. I want to take it to the next level with your Provençal Seafood Stew but I am afraid I would always be tempted …
BlackSalt was excellent. My partner and I dined here for Valentine's Day. The food was fresh, impeccably seasoned, and tasty (especially the mussels). The service was excellent (thanks Lisa). The ambiance was sleek and modern. I'll definitely be back!!
The Food was Absolutely Great the Service was Flawless the Plate size and Portions were Great ... I was very pleased to share a meal at Black-salt !!!
I went for dinner and ordered 1 water, 1 mixed drink, 1 soup and 1 salad and my bill was $59.00 before tip. Just really unfortunate and disappointing.

I can't recommend this place enough. It was a heavenly experience. Absolutely everything was delicious. No, delicious doesn't quite define it. I can't wait...
Love the fresh selections, wine menu and superb service!

Very satisfied (y)
Always exceptional dinners and memorable fish to take home. I bought black cod 2 days ago. It was like butter and melted in my mouth. So very light. This restaurant/ market is a gem.
The Oyster bash back 5 years ago, was one of the best foodie experiences I've had. Ever. Always grateful,
Colette
This is not an inexpensive restaurant, by any means, but their weekday $20 prix fixe "express" menu is a steal. You have your choice of either salad or soup, an entree and either dessert or a glass of one of their featured wines. If you want, for another $5 you can either have both soup and salad or add the glass of wine/beer to your starter/entree/dessert order...If you add it all up, the...
Beautiful restaurant and delicioso food
Best crab cakes ever.. nothing in the Midwest compares. Excellent food, excellent service.
Great food.
One of the best places to get Barren Island Oysters
Amazing all around food. Wait staff was great in informing us of everything that was going on. Great attention to detail. Mom definitely enjoyed her food:)
Awesome
If your in the DC and enjoy seafood you must try black salt. Just make sure to save room for some of the delicious dessert!
Very nice
WOW - in the best way!!! We.... WOW - in the best way!!!

Dined here for Sunday brunch and it was a delicious experience. Food including scones, and crab version of Eggs Benedict were wonderful as was the efficient and friendly service. The price is right, plus we go to visit the local farmer's market.

It was good needs more things on the menu for a brunch service ... I love the openness of the restaurant . The food was delicious and healthy ..

This mouth watering restaurant is a fish market and dining experience for the whole family! It is a seafood destination when visiting Washington D.C., as the restaurant makes a commitment to sustainability of shellfish and fish globally. You will have a conscious and delicious dining experience no matter what you order from the menu!
This restaurant really doesn't disappoint. If you like fish you will love Blacksalt. Definitely better to be in the main part of the restaurant rather than the dreary back room. Lunch and Brunch are particularly good value. Highly recommended.
Fantastic, fresh seafood and excellent service. They have a great happy hour on week days and weekends, as well. You need to drive or take a taxi, but it is worth the trip.
One of our best meals we have ever had! We had a 5:30 reservation for a pre theater dinner and actually arrived a bit earlier due to light traffic so we stumbled upon their happy hour much to our delight. All the staff from hostess to servers to floor managers we talked to were really cool and friendly and were the perfect compliment to all the amazing food we feasted on thru H.H. and our meal....
The seafood is fresh, served simply prepared with a large attention to detail, and if the menu wasn’t enough to catch your attention, don’t miss their wine list. The Big-Eye Tuna Tartare (best in DC in my opinion) and Wood-Fire Grilled Octopus are starters not to be missed, as well as a large collection of amazing oysters (DC politico Tucker Carlson’s favorite place to get them), and possibly...
Came here for brunch and loved it! It's got clean, nice decor and the food was excellent. I got the shrimp and grits and my friend got the eggs Benedict on homemade biscuits. There was a little too much horseradish in the Bloody Mary, but the Suzy Q peach puree & sparkling wine cocktail was yummy. I went in a Sunday and there was a farmers market next door.
When the cab first arrived to the front door of my next adventure in Washington D.C., I wasn't sure what to expect. The first thing I saw was a full-scale fish market, with everything from Wild Halibut to Rainbow Trout sitting on ice and a few steps in, there was a raw bar to my left. It was certainly different than all the other restaurants I had been to in D.C. As I reached the back of the...
I don't blame the reviewer who commented on BlackSalt in '09 about the distance and resulting cabfare. If you want to go to BlackSalt, you pretty much have to make detailed plans in terms of transportation and timing, especially if you have reservations. I live in DC and I had plenty of time to plan but I was still unfortunately stuck with taking a $13 cab ride to BlackSalt. The D6 bus does go to Palisades right on MacArthur Blvd., but on weekends the bus can run kind of slow. You can also offset the cab fare by taking the Circulator to Wisconsin and M and then taking a cab the rest of the...
Was a tourist in DC for the weekend. Have spent a lot of time in DC recently. Told this was ""the place"" for seafood. Cabfare from downtown was $12 each way and couldn't get a return cab for 40 minutes despite the restaurant calling.
Fish was good, portions were tiny. Waitress acted as if she were ready for the night to be over. Curt and disinterested. Tuna ordered extra rare was overcooked.
Not worth the cabfare, and not worth waiting 40 minutes to return to hotel. Restaurant owner needs to work out better system with cab companies--this place is in farthest NW DC, and you won't...

Seafood: BlackSalt is near the top of everyone's "best seafood place in D.C." list for good reason. It's cozy (a polite word for "on the small side") and hard to get into, but it's worth the effort. (Reservations are usually a must.) Once seated, prepare yourself for such tantalizing dishes as wood-grilled Mediterranean sardines, fried Ipswich clams, bigeye tuna tartare and house-cured...
