Great Must See Day Trip!

Although located in Surry County, Virginia west of Smithfield and South of the James from Jamestown and Williamsburg, well worth the day trip because of the ancient mansion built in 1665 has a great tour and the outside 17th-century English formal gardens, slave quarters, 1710 Barn, and smokehouse are awesome!

To be able to be in such an old house, one of very few like it left standing -- anywhere, makes you stop and think. I like that a lot. To learn the quirks of the people who lived there made the tour that much more interesting. And to hear about Bacon's Rebellion was very much appreciated. It's an event...

We visited Bacon's Castle Friday, Dec 6, 2013. The house is a great example of preservation work and the importance of it. It is very interesting to see the different time periods and additions in one building so to speak. Carol was a very informative docent and be sure to buy the pass to see Smith's Ford Plantation as well....

What a great tour and site. This house is one of Virgina's architectural and historic treasures. I have long wanted to see Bacon's Castle (really neither Bacon's house or a castle, but a unique survivor of the 1600s in VA.) The tour was comprehensive and Todd the site manager tailored it to the groups interests This site and tour is...

This is a great place to visit and experience 17th century life in the U.S. The architecture information about the period is great. Todd, the tour guide, told many stories about the families that lived in the house and the history of the area. He also extended the tour to nearly 1 1/2 hours.

You get to see every room and get the full history throughout. Todd took us on an enjoyable 45 minute walk, climb, and talk. He really knew all about the rooms and the history regarding Nathaniel Bacon. Well worth the visit.

I found this site via Groupon and cannot express how much I enjoyed visiting here. The history of the house is rich and it is a true architectural wonder, as it is the only surviving example of its kind in North America. The staff was unfailingly pleasant and informative. It is a touch out-of-the-way, requiring a ferry to cross the...

A truly remarkable landmark. Excellent preservation and tour guide was extremely informative. Getting to see the basement structure and a peak in the attic room was the highlight of the tour. The outbuidings is a part of the past that I hope they continue to preserve. A little disappointed in the gardens, was expecting a little more than a border...

Take the free 20 minute car ferry from Jamestown to Surry and follow the signs toward Smithfield until you see the signs for Bacon's Castle. We had a lovely tour of the 17th Century home, garden and outbuildings. Great tour guide, handouts and coloring book for children. Bacon's Castle is nestled among the country side. It's a beautiful location, and a facinating story. The tour guide is very informed, with a plethora of information. It has a large addition completed in the mid 1800s bringing the total square footage to approximately 9000. The rooms have been furnished with period pieces. There is a fee for...
