Editorial reviews from the web (4)

Tucked into Downtown's Hotel Monaco, this "casual" tavern turns out solid New American fare, buoyed by a "great selection of local beer and well-made cocktails"; the atmosphere is "comfortable", service is "friendly" and if a few penny-pinchers sniff it's "just ok for the price", supporters still "keep it in the mix."

Red Star Tavern & Roast House Restaurant Review

Located in the stylish Hotel Monaco, this Southern-influenced “roast house” offers creative American cooking in a lively, boisterous atmosphere. The bar has special menus for both scotch and bourbon, and does a brisk, after work and happy hour business with a full range of libations. For dinner, the menu is comforting and inventive with everything from deviled eggs and pork cracklings to...

Would have to say this place is mediocre. To start on a positive note....the interior is nice, classy, dark wood, meets bourbon and fireplace vibe, and decent dessert. On the contrary, our 1st drink took 15 minutes to get to us. Waiter did not check back in until we had to send a table buser to find him. Drinks were …

Stopped in for a quick drink with friends before dinner and was delightful. I've always had good, quick service in the bar and been pleased with my order. It's a great place to pop in for an afterwork drink with co-workers. Never had to wait.

Enjoyed the porkchop with Apple slaw and potatoes. This place always has great wines by the glass. Noise level can get a bit high, however, if you are trying to have one on one conversation.

First time here. Had the beef brisket. Cooked just right. The greens were the best ever had. The celery root was spot on. Bread was fresh baked with wonderful whipped butter. Service was excellent. Evan really knew the menu and made great recommendations. Highly recommend.

I really like this place, the service was excellent the place was clean and didn't disappoint. I had a nice time here they took care of us at all times. The lavatories were well maintained I couldn't complain. I didn't eat here so I can't comment on the food but everyone was pleasant and the environment was perfect. Probably my favorite place in PDX so far, that might change...

What to Drink: Bourbon, whether you order it from the restaurant's large bourbon wall or incorporated into a specialty cocktail such as the bar's warm reserve bourbon and nocello Nutty Woodford drink, is a great choice.

Save Money: A separate, less expensive bar menu is served until the bar closes.
