At the northeastern tip of Virginia Beach, on the cape where the mouth of the bay meets the ocean, the historic Old Cape Henry Lighthouse is near the site where the English landed on their way to Jamestown in 1607. This lighthouse, however, didn't light anyone's way until 1792. Across the street to seaward is the replacement to the old lighthouse, but it isn't open to visitors. Be prepared to...

Built in 1791-92, this picturesque brick structure was the first lighthouse authorized by the U.S. Congress. It marked the southern entrance to Chesapeake Bay until 1881, when the "new" lighthouse across the road took over. The Cape Henry Lighthouse offered wonderful views along with a bit of history for Hamilton fans.
Stairs have to be climbed to reach the lighthouse, and of course, many more if you want to go to the top.
Decent gift shop manned by helpful staff....

The lighthouse offers a beautiful view of the Atlantic as well as Fort Story. The lighthouse also has some interesting history behind it. The gift shop was nice and the staff were very accommodating.

BEAUTIFUL piece of history! Make sure you take the time to see this. Since it's on a base, I'Ds are checked, but you can still go through after you're cleared at the gate. Great gift shop also.

Take a recommended drive to the oldest government-built lighthouse in America.

This Virginia Beach icon was established in 1791, making it the country's oldest government built lighthouse. The lighthouse's storied career spanned nearly 100 years, beginning with its contribution to safe commerce on the Southeastern coast. Located near the site where the first English settlers landed in 1607, the lighthouse sustained damage during the Civil War but was later restored. A...
