Turning your pool dream into a nightmare

DO NOT waste a dime of your money or second of your time with National Pools. They have removed my review once already. In September 2020, we contracted with National Pools on a fiberglass inground pool package with a salt chlorinator and retaining wall. The owner/president, Dan Katzman came to our property and advised that we needed a retaining wall in order to be able to get the pool. He added 10k to the contract for the wall. Since signing the contract, I have used every form of communication to try to find out who would install the retaining wall and when, with either no answer or complete run around. Katzman keeps changing his story and his company is completely incompetent. The pool was installed on April 22, 2021, and no one from National Pools was there to supervise the subcontractor, Central Jersey Paving, who installed the pool and destroyed our property including our fence and FIOS line. We subsequently failed building, plumbing and electrical inspections. I had to fill in the electrical contractor's trenches, manually backfill around the pool, build a makeshift retaining wall to prevent my filter and pump platform from collapsing, schedule and reschedule inspections. We have paid 95% of our contracted price and still have no retaining wall and National's subcontractors want to charge us several thousand dollars more for it. We have crumbling walls of earth encroaching on our brand new pool along with a safety hazard. As part of National's pool package, you are supposed to get start-up chemicals and supplies, and maintenance for four weeks, but they always seem to "forget" something. Their start-up and maintenance is just a completely worthless sales tactic to make you feel like you're getting something extra. There was only one exception and two individuals who were helpful, Ryan and Marty. Otherwise, they do absolutely nothing, make excuses and complain. Most recently, Lauren, the head of fiberglass operations was at our house to perform maintenance, install the salt chlorinator and test our water. She installed the chlorinator but did not tell me anything about how to use it. Her partner hooked up the vacuum hose backwards, never attached it to the skimmer, then decided not to vacuum and switched to a brush. I finally received my backwash hose a month after installation, but they forgot the hose clamp. They never cleaned the pool or backwashed it. Lauren tested the water with her kit and when I asked how it was she said she wanted to take a sample back to the store to test it in the machine, but insisted it was safe. She said they would backup into my driveway and drop off the salt for my pool, but just took off. She also said she'd call me later with the water results and possibly come back, doing neither. When contacted the next day about what happened, Lauren said she "forgot" to drop off the salt, that it was too hot out (81 degrees) and her and her partner had worked two days straight in the heat. Now knowing better than to trust National, I took a water sample to Sparkling Pools who tested the water and advised it was extremely acidic. I had to buy alkalite and calcium since National never added or provided the alkalinity and PH stabilizer start up chemicals as promised and required. Meanwhile my family had been swimming in extremely irritable acidic water for weeks. However, Lauren told me we had a 13,500 gallon pool so that's what I bought chemicals for. When our levels were high after adding chemicals, I called the manufacturer and was advised our pool is 9200 gallons. We have filed complaints with the NJ Division of Consumer Affairs and BBB. Check out the other reviews including on yelp and BBB. Do yourself a favor, whether you are looking to buy a pool, spa, supplies or chemicals, stay far away from National Pools. They will turn your dream into a complete nightmare.

Fantastic Job!

I purchased an inground pool in 2013. They did a FANTASTIC job! I highly recommend them to anyone that is looking into buying a pool or simply just grabbing a few chemicals. I love their retail staff at the Hillsborough location. They were very helpful during and after the purchase!

Steer clear of National Pools or learn the hard way.

Ok, first some quick background. I have a large swimming pool which I maintained myself until June of 2012 when I fell seriously and traumatically ill, leaving me hospitalized for over a year. I am still on a slow mend both physically and mentally as I write this.

Needless to say our pool fell by the wayside and remained closed for two years. Given the fact I can no longer deal with our pool myself I decided to hire a company to open, close, and maintain the pool over the summer season.

I sadly bypassed Angie’s List and opted for National Pools of Hillsborough because I had been buying my supplies from them for over a decade. What proceeded was one of the worst customer service experiences I think I’ve ever encountered. From workers not showing up at the appointed time, then not at all, without so much as a call from the company. I had to call them and speak to Robert (the world’s worst customer service rep) and hear lame excuses describing just how utterly disorganized this company is.

They finally showed up and pumped out the pool and asked me to fill it for the next 15 or so hours. I did and the pool was crystal clear. Then they didn’t come back, and didn’t come back, so I called Robert the Terrible to find if they were actually in the business of working on pools or whether this whole thing was a hoax.

To make a long story short, Robert expended all his capital by essentially blaming me, the customer for their failure to perform the agreed upon work. After his tirade, he tried to calmly go on as if I was going to sign a contract with National. I calmly told him to send back my deposit and that I would seek the service of a real pool company elsewhere.

Perhaps that was a bit flip on my part, but I was pretty mad about the whole thing and I don’t deal with emotional situations all that well right now due to my PTSD. All I know is that I wouldn’t hire these clowns to run a bath for me.

I highly recommend that anyone who is seeking a pool maintenance company that you really check them out on Angie’s List or one of those services, or at least the BBB. There are too many reputable people in the pool business, why settle for the bottom of the barrel, which IMHO is what National Pools represents.

Good Luck.

Honesty Is Key

My husband and I met with a pool salesman last week. We read all the reviews and decided to make the appointment. It was like having friends over! Right from the start we were completely comfortable and didn't feel pressured at all. We expressed our concerns for our children and pets with an in ground pool and were put right at ease. Even with my thousands of questions and interruptions :)
He did explain to us from the get go that different townships require different documents and the permit can take anywhere from 1 to 6 weeks. We GREATLY appreciated his honesty and will do whatever we need to, to help the process along. We then met with the designer and got to see in 3D what our pool and backyard will look like upon completion! The whole family is excited and cant wait.
Thanks for making us feel like a part of your family!

This place is horrible. They did work that they recommended, but then when the work fell apart they told me what they did was not going to fix the problem. They then recommended other work to fix...

I put in in ground pool with them in 2014. The job was completed within the 4-6 week period they said. The service has been outstanding. I just ordered my 2015 Maxxus spa from them two weeks....

I'd like to give these incompetent morons a minus star rating. Completely inept, untrained and unprofessional. If you want your pool cared for, go to any other pool service company, but not this outfit! Can't wait until they widen Rte 206 and put these morons out of business.
