Editorial reviews from the web (2)

This classic French restaurant is tucked in a grotto on the climb to Bromley Mountain. The two dining rooms are perched over the Bromley Brook, and at night lights magically illuminate a small waterfall. Ask for a window table. Specialties include Chateaubriand béarnaise and rack of lamb with rosemary for two. Chef Dana Markey's crispy sweetbreads with Dijonnaise sauce are a favorite.

This place is a little hard to find, a left turn off Route 11/30 as you ascend east into the mountains above Manchester Center. But it's worth it. The best tables are along the windows, which overlook a lovely creek spotlighted at night. Inside the tollhouse of a long-since-bypassed byway, the restaurant is a romantic mix of modern and old. The French menu changes seasonally, with dishes that...

Long time residents of S. VT first time visit to Mistral's at Toll Gate. From the moment we parked and looked over at this restaurant we knew we were in for a treat. Having eaten at quite a few French restaurants in our travels this felt like a country place one might visit in southern France. The hostess made us...

Wonderful Anniversary Dinner

We spent our anniversary evening here. Mark, our server, was polite, answered questions with detailed descriptions and prep techniques for each dish, and made recommendations when asked. The pork special and duck were perfectly prepared. Our only complaint was that the Pinot Noir, which was delicious!, did not pair well with the duck. However, I saved it for our chocolate...

Romantic hideaway dinner, no loud music

Book a romantic table for two looking out on the brook, and order the duck. The wines are exquisite. The service is lovely. This is a small countryside place, but with elegant touches, including white table cloths and a decor that feels less like red barn vermont and more like upscale Miami or Brentwood (CA).They have a larger dining room...

Birthday Present

My wife took me to this restaurant for a birthday dinner on a Sunday night. We sat overlooking a bubbling, rocky stream and enjoyed Foie Gras Maison as an appetizer and Chateaubrian for two for dinner. The meal, service, and ambiance are superb. The setting in the woods of Vermont is as unexpected as it is perfect. Put Mistral high...

Always a special treat! Dinner here was excellent. Sitting by the waterfall on a hot summer night was just perfect. All four of us had a great meal.
