This classically styled Chinese garden takes up an entire city block and is the largest of its type outside of China. The walls surrounding the garden in Portland's Chinatown separate the urban 21st century from the timeless Chinese landscape within. It is designed to evoke the wild mountains of China and to create a tranquil oasis within an urban setting. The garden is centered around a small...

It was very busy because I visited on the last weekend of Chinese New Year. We saw lion dances, enjoyed artists and the flora. I'd really like to enjoy it during a less busy time as well.

Even on the cusp of spring, there are flowering shrubs and vines. Even on a rainy day, there are reasons to pause and contemplate. Look for the bat wing roof tiles, the river rocks, the scholar's retreat -- each vista is crafted to encourage one's appreciation of shapes, textures and scents. Did not take a tour, but engaged with some...

The tea room is really special, if a little pricey. I chose the formal tea ceremony and the Jasmine Pearl tea. Service was excellent and attentive, the entire process was explained to us and...

My sightseeing pace tends to be frenetic, always on the go, but this lovely garden and tea room encourages one to slow down and contemplate.
