Commuting is a fact of life for tens of million of Americans. In suburban Dallas, there is the Interurban Electric Railway that commemorates some of the significant developments in urban transportation. Between 1908 and 1948 the Texas Electric Railway ran from Dallas to Denison, among many other routes throughout Texas. The primary stop between these locations was in Plano, which is now the...

The Interurban Railway Museum is housed in a restored depot that served Plano from 1908 until 1948. Historical exhibits detail Plano's early days and even before then and highlight the forces that shaped what the city has become. A train car outside the depot has been restored to show what the mail cars and passenger cars of the time looked like. The museum is free and guided tours of the train...

This museum is an interesting counter-point to the DART station next door. We had interurban transportation as far north as Sherman (the old rail line was close to home) and then we got rid of it.

We stumbled across this place today, and 90 minutes later my wife had to drag me and our 10- and 12-year-old sons out of there. The exhibits are fun (lots of electric circuits to build and arcs to...

Nice little museum about Plano's historic trainstation. Inside the museum (old ticket station), you'll see how the train helped the early settlers of Plano. Outside, you get to climb aboard the old surviving car, and take a tour. The museum is located in historic Haggard Park.

Alright for a quick visit

I took my two year old and it was a good place for him. A few things to keep his attention like how electric currents work, buttons he could push and things would happen, a small model electric train, and he was able to look at the train outside and go inside of it too.

Nice way to spend an hour or so with kids if you are in the area. There is a lot to learn about the history of Plano and the Interurbans.Suggested donation is $2 for adults and $1 for kids. The folks are all really nice and toured my 2 boys as if they were a full field trip. There is a park next to it, and parking is free.
