Interstate Air Conditioning: questionable service and dishonest? You be the judge.

Since buying our home in Nashville, we’ve had Interstate AC service out twice a year to checkout our HVAC system. Our HVAC is older, and has always worked perfectly fine. The purpose of these service calls was to clean twice a year and give it a once-over.

This past December 2007, their technician alerted us that the HVAC’s Heat Exchanger had developed a rust hole (this was the first we had heard of this rusting part, although Interstate had checked over our HVAC 2x a year since 2005), and that this may produce carbon monoxide in the house, otherwise the HVAC was working fine. This was an expensive fix ($600), but we did it about a week later when the part came in.
We then had an uncharacteristically hot weather (in the 70s), and the next time the HVAC was used was a couple of days later. At that time, the HVAC started to run the fan continuously, but without producing any heat. We called Interstate and the next morning a technician came out and diagnosed that either the main circuit board or a switch had gone out – essentially the HVAC now failed to sense that it wasn’t hot and so ran the fan trying to cool itself down. Testing the switch (a relatively cheap part: total cost of replacement including labor, ~$100), the tech told us that is was fine, leaving the more expensive circuit board ($600 ) the reason for the malfunction.
We were not interested in investing more money into this HVAC (it is 15-20 years old), and so brought out the space heaters and began getting quotes for replacing the entire HVAC.

It was highly suspicious that our entire HVAC system now needed to be replaced within hours after Interstate changed the $600 dollar heat exchanger. You can be the judge here, but to us it seemed that Interstate damaged the HVAC, but of course how would we ever prove this?

At that time, the technician called his boss and recognizing that we had just replaced the $600 heat exchanger part based on Interstate’s recommendation, they told us that they would reduce their $5430 price to $4800 on a new Trane 3 ton model. We later specifically got a quote of $4800 for XB13c from Interstate. This special reduction that we were going to be given we later found out was not that special. The Trane XB13c is essentially the cheaper version of the Trane XL13c. The difference between these two models: years of warranty and a quieter maybe more efficient fan. For $5430 we could buy the superior model from Air Care Heating and Cooling. At that time we decided to drop Interstate completely and buy the new HVAC from Air Care Heating and Cooling.

Why Air Care Heating and Cooling is highly recommended? Air Care lost 5000 dollars by being too honest!
Air Care Heating and Cooling moved their schedule around to quickly try to get our HVAC installed (night time temperatures were now in the 20s). The morning of the installation, Air Care called and said that they would be sending their own tech out to look at our broken HVAC just to make sure that nothing funny was going on. Wouldn’t you know! It was the cheap switch that was broken, something the ARS tech found out within minutes. Our HVAC was up and running again and did not need to be replaced.

Horrible Customer Service!!! I was suppose to have my HVAC repaired this afternoon at 2pm. Never received a call and around 4:15pm I finally called and the only response as to why I never got a head's up was that "I slipped through the cracks" and the dispatcher still couldn't tell me when the repair man was going to be at my home. Absolutely horrible tracking and no accountability. Would not...

I have been with Interstate AC for about 15 years. I have always had good service and today was another example. Within 2 hours of calling them , my ac unit had been repaired and running again. In todays times, finding "good service" is worth telling people about. This company does have good service based on my experiences.

Interstate AC has taken care of my and my father's HVAC systems for over 20 years. They have always been very truthful, giving me all the options available for repairs, instead of "you've got to replace it." They're also very quick to respond and fix any problems.

I read the other reviews and I must say I had Interstate AC come out after I had Air Care. The only reason I call Air Care is because of the reviews I had read but I had used Interstate before and they did a great job. The Air Care rep said I need to change out my unit which is a 3 ton unit and was going to be about 4k. He did not advise any repairs only replacing it. He said the coil is...
