Editorial reviews from the web (4)

You'll feel "instantly transported" at this West Village Japanese where the "refreshing" menu of "obscure" small plates is heavy on "fantastic" pork dishes ("try the pig's feet") that attract a "mostly Japanese clientele"; the "warm" staff is "eager to educate" newbies, though, and "reasonable" tabs are a plus.

Are pig's feet your favorite food? Well, allow me to introduce you to your dream restaurant: Hakata Tonton, which serves a menu made up more or less exclusively of the delicacy, served from a variety of pan-Asian perspectives.

Sure, it's a Japanese sushi joint, with all the quiet restrained service and such, but the Japanese are eating pig's feet (tonsoku), just like your country cousins. Only get this: when you eat ‘em Japanese style, they're supposed to be good for you. Called Japanese soul food, these collagen-rich eats can allegedly restore and maintain that youthful glow. Fans also love the service, the...

This is one of my favorite restaurants in the city and that's saying a lot, since there are endless amounts to choose from.

Make sure to make a reservation! Weekdays are less crowded. Order some appetizers but don't over eat! Hot pot is delicious! I usually order the original which is hakata. The broth is so flavorful, aromatic and goes well over the garlic fried rice and udon noodles.

Always good and improving whole time . The only problem is open table reservation is not working properly .

Very hit and miss. The tokatsu (pig feet) were excellent. The pork belly quite underwhelming. The scallops with uni almost inedible.

Fusion dishes combines Japanese tonsoku with Vietnamese, French, Korean, and Chinese dishes for a delicious late night meal in Greenwich Village.

Know Before You Go: The tonsoku hot pot is a great meal for two. A hotplate is brought to the table with spinach, tomatoes, dried mushrooms, scallions, sweet white onions, and hunks of pig foot in a rich sweet broth, cooked to your order in a pan.

What to Drink: Complete your meal with a Japanese beer or one of their many wines offered.
