The New El Portal Restaurant Restaurant Review

City Councilwoman Mary Rose Wilcox and her husband Earl took over the historic but decrepit El Portal, spiffed it up, changed the menu and re-opened as The New El Portal---a clean, well-lit place that plays to downtown business people, local politicos and members of the Hispanic community. At lunchtime, it’s hard to get a table because everybody’s there for a crack at the hearty soups (which...

In ShortBelieve in reincarnation. Wilcox and company have refurbished the interior completely, giving it a bright, fresh new look to start anew. Still, it's the down-home Sonoran food that's the main attraction. Try the cheese-gooey chilaquiles bathed in red or green chili sauce and topped with two fried eggs, and the calabacitas, a casserole of squash, onions, chilies and cheese.

I wish I had known about this place a long time ago. My family met there for lunch after a sister had tried it and gave it rave reviews. Now I am so ""hooked"" that I can't think of going anywhere else for Mexican food. I finally found a place who makes hot sauce the way I like it--HOT!!! Thank God for refills!

Pros

+ Wonderful staff, Inexpensive

Cons

- Longer days, Could be larger
