Richmond's oldest residence, the Old Stone House in Shockoe Bottom, just west of Church Hill Historic District, now holds a museum honoring the famous writer. Poe grew up in Richmond, and although he never lived in this early- to mid-18th-century structure, his disciples have made it a monument with some of the writer's possessions on display.

As a young man, the poet Edgar Allan Poe worked as an editor, critic, and writer for the Southern Literary Messenger. The desk and chair he used are among the memorabilia, photographs, portraits, and documents that tell the story of his rather sad life and career. The museum complex centers on the Old Stone House, the oldest building in Richmond; it dates to about 1737. Poe didn't live here,...

Be clear that Poe never lived here. Free parking. No photography permitted. Smell of cat urine around the property of 5 buildings. It doesn't take long.

Museum could use some better management. Or more funds

I have been to this museum twice, once with family a few years ago and recently I decided to visit the museum again while I was in town to take care of some family business. I remember the gift shop looking a lot more organized, more welcoming, and containing better quality merchandise on my last visit. Part of my reason...

We especially loved visiting the black cats that grace the museum with their presence . The staff is phenomenal!! They were informative, friendly, and so helpful . We...

How appropriate that the oldest house (about 1797 built) in Richmond should house the story and artifacts of the life of Edgar Allan Poe. The collection is spread among 4 small brick, buildings surrounding a private garden over which a bust of Poe presides. The rather funky model of Richmond in his day was interesting to locate his whereabouts as...

The exhibits are well done, the staff is informative and friendly. The grounds are well kept and it is larger than it appears. Six bucks a person is a bargain for the entertainment value.
