North Carolina's mineral fields contain the greatest variety of minerals in the nation. Burnham Standish Colburn was fascinated with these minerals and acquired quite a collection. The retired bank president formed the Southern Appalachian Mineral Society in 1927. Now housed at Pack Place these specimens can be viewed along with other exhibits throughout the year.

Well designed displays. informative. great for kids and collector alike. has scavenger hunts available that are age appropriate. A lot beautiful and great specimens of all sizes. Small places such as this need support after seeing the vandalism within the museum.
Ok, this place is not big. You probably won't spend the day here with your kids. But the time you do spend there will be fun. The woman at the front was so wonderfully friendly to the whole family. She set the kids (7 & 10) up with a scavenger hunt that they enjoyed. Best part of the museum was...

Located in the Pack Place Education, Arts and Sciences Center, this museum is, according to The Washington Post, "a mini-Smithsonian of gems." Within, you can view natural treasures from North Carolina and the world, including rare gems, fluorescents, and volcanic and earthquake artifacts.
