Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge

Virginia's Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge occupies the southern third of Assateague Island, directly off Chincoteague Island. (The northern two-thirds, part of Maryland, comprise the Assateague Island National Seashore.) Created in 1943 as a resting and breeding area for the imperiled greater snow goose as well as other birds, this refuge's location makes it a prime "fly-over" habitat....

There are a lot of trails for walking, running or biking here. Scenic views and ponies! We didn't see any up close during our visit but did see a herd having a morning snack in the fields. We loved climbing the lighthouse and the views from the top.

Beautiful area. Windy but peaceful day. Wasn't crowded. Was able to see many wildlife. The greatest were the ponies. Definitely walk the trails but always scan your area for the ponies. Many occasions they were close to us in the woods and we almost missed them. Beach access was closed this afternoon and so was the lighthouse but we knew...

Beautiful wildlife preserve, but like any park with wildlife, it’s unpredictable what will be seen. Chincoteague Wild Life Refuge was a great place to visit with our young daughter. She loved seeing the wild horses!
We enjoyed the trails and wish we could have extended our trip to spend another day in the park.
It was a little chilly the weekend we were tgere, but it was well worth the trip.
