Chez Sardine Has Now Metamorphosed into Bar Sardine

After a two week revamp, Gabe Stulman's Chez Sardine is reopening today as Bar Sardine. Besides the name and address, the two places don't have all that much in common. Chef Mehdi Brunet-Benkritly has ditched the unconventional Japanese Izakaya menu for something more like a "neighborhood bar." Instead of breakfast pancakes with fish tartare, now the menu includes bar snacks like smoked bird...

"Tiny and always crowded", this "immediate-hit" addition to Gabe Stulman's West Village empire gratifies nose-to-tail piscivores and foie gras connoisseurs alike, thanks to a "wonderful" menu emphasizing Japanese seafood (just know "those little plates can add up"); slatted wooden ceilings and low tables lend the "cute" quarters a streamlined feel.

Salmon Heads & Roe Pancakes: One Year at Chez Sardine

Just over a year ago, West Village empire builder Gabe Stulman and executive chef/partner Mehdi Brunet-Benkritly opened Chez Sardine, a 30-seat "inauthentic" Japanese izakaya, serving everything from hand rolls to foie gras grilled cheese. Danielle Stulman, the manager of Fedora and Gabe's sister, was tapped to be the GM of this tiny hot spot, and she was recently promoted to run the front of...

Lunch Special at Fletcher's; Happy Hour at Marco Polo

GOWANUS ? Fletcher's Brooklyn Barbecue has a new lunch special. It's a quarter-rack of ribs with chips and a soda for ten bucks, or with a beer for $12. And this Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. the Gowanus barbecue joint is hosting a special Brooklyn Brewery happy hour featuring the Sorarchi Ace. [EaterWire]

CARROLL GARDENS ? Recently-renovated Smith Street old-timer Marco Polo Ristorante has...

The izakaya wing of the Little Wisco empire. Gabe Stulman partners up with Fedora chef Mehdi Brunet-Benkritly for Japanese pub grub. As name signals, not exactly obsessed with authenticity here. Grilled cheese gets rich with foie gras and egg cooked in bacon broth. Sashimi, rice balls, house-made potato chips. Perla sommelier covers the beverages, adds some Euro wines to tight sake list. Petite...

I could write way too much, but I'll keep it simple. Go here if you want a fantastic dining experience in the West Village. Check the menu on-line, book your time & day, then enjoy. I don't know if the service or the food was better, so don't fight a great thing.....just go with it!
My wife and I will...

Quiet Sunday brunch

Roaming as solo traveler in the West Village in search for a brunch spot has proven to be a frustrating experience until I found Chez Sardine. Quiet and elegant, it has a compact yet diversified menu. I had a great Smoked Char Chirashi. Recommended, especially if you have no reservations or willingness to wait for a seat in the hottest...

Wonderful and innovative

An excellent restaurant. The cuisine is innovative without being pretentious. The sushi was amazing, as were the pancakes. The space in the West Village is small but beautifully designed with large windows. Staff were warm, knowledgeable and fun. Highly recommended if you want food you won't get anywhere else.

Interesting artisan menu. This is a serious menu with items so interesting and layered with tons of flavor. Servers are serious about their craft. Highly recommend!

An accidental gem find

We stopped at Chez Sardine for a four-some brunch without any particular expectations. It turned out to be the best meal we had over the Labor Day weekend in NY. Without exception, everything we had was unusual, sophisticated and truly delicious. I would call it a New American Cuisine and a truly creative one.
The staff was very nice, welcoming...

Business description (1)

You might not expect creations such as caviar and butter toast or hamachi sushi with ginger; but it's precisely this kind of unconventional thinking that has made this West Village tavern, such a popular spot. The menu offers a mix of American and Japanese specialties. Start off with the small choice of snacks that include Edamame and Lime Pepper Salt and Pork and Unagi Hand Roll. You can then...
