NOT Class A WORK OR CLEANUP - horrible

Better Built Restoration in Suffolk does not provide Class A Work or Cleanup and they play the blame game. Hired this contractor to rebuild a water damage through the insurance company. The initial meeting was nice and made me trust them. It ended there. I was constantly having to check behind Jerry for Quality control. Rodney never stepped a day in my house except to take the work, and pick up a check. The issues are far to numerous to name, but stay away from this company, and if you use them, Verify all the work before you sign the paper and give them the check. And hope you don't get Jerry. He is a liar. 5 months later, and my bathroom is still not usable, and my kitchen is still leaking from repairs, and there is still debris under my house. My kitchen is not finished, and no one will come complete it. I am tired of making phone calls.....UPDATE!!!! I think his reply is kind of ridiculous considering BBR actually quoted the bathroom demo work (we did not demo it ourselves) and hired/subcontracted the contractor that left the debris under the house, and the only special order item was kitchen tile, which I called and asked Rodney if they could install large 2 x 2's BEFORE we purchased, and he said yes. And I most certainly did not ask for any of this work to be free. We offered to pay for all additional work completed. And I was pressured into signing the completion contract by Jerry who told me he would get in trouble if he went back to the office without it, but assured me BBR would take care of all my concerns even after I signed it.......I am naïve and trustworthy and was taken advantage of. Business Response

As the late Paul Harvey would say " here's the rest of the story" Ms Angellio was a problem customer from the start, so much that Serve Pro walked off the job and we were asked to complete their work. She was always changing what she wanted and wanted us to do extras for free. She and her boyfriend ( poor guy ) gutted the bathroom and then ask BBR to repair it. we gave her a great price as we were already there. She insisted on buying her own material and repeatedly purchased the wrong items ( all special order of course ) She blamed everyone for her problems - us, serve pro, the insurance company even her boyfriend calling him an unskilled idiot ( once again, poor guy ) anyway the debris under the house was material left by a pervious contractor that no doubt walked or better yet, ran away from this customer. As for phone calls this woman called day and night week day and weekends the phone never quit. It is truly a shame that there is no list that BAD customer can be put on so that the honest businesses of this world could be fore warned. Long story short we as a company survived this nightmare of a customer and only got paid because our contract and work was properly documented. I can present a signed completion from Ms Angellio stating that all the work was to her satisfaction...beware other contractors she's still out there. GOOOOD DAY! [Less]

Quick, Efficient, and Punctual

Hurricane Irene landed a tree on my house. These guys were on the scene as soon as i could get through to my insurance company. They were knowledgable, quick, efficient and most-important, punctual. They performed a thorough inspection and will return for the actual restoration. I will update when restoration is complete.

Poor Workmanship!!! Does not honor warantee

I agree with the other post. After tree fell on house, met with Dave the owner, nice guy but the good things ended there. I told the all I wanted was 2 things: 1) to be kept informed and 2) quality workmanship. I got neither. I asked for a time line for the job knowing that it would change and asked for an update a couple times a week but never got it. There were weeks where his crew spent less then 8 hours working on our house as witnessed by the neighbors. When I was asked to have materials picked out for installation they were always on time. His people were late putting tarp over roof resulting in extensive water intrusion. The tarp came off 2 more times. They left nails all through the yard from the tarp. They damaged a tub because they didn't wrap it. They didn’t cover the unaffected furniture or flooring resulting in the having to replace an unaffected room’s carpet. We gave them the exact specs of the carpet and even told them where we bought it and they said they couldn’t find it. We went back to the place where we bought it and found enough to do the job. They tried to pass some cheap stuff off to us to use. They packed away damp towels and when we moved back in and was unpacking they were smelly so out of courtesy they had them cleaned. They started installing hardwood flooring before the painting was complete and didn’t cover it adequately. They left trash under the house and cut through the vapor barrier and didn’t repair. The rinsed / dumped the paint buckets in the yard leaving a white patch. They rinsed paint brushes in our kitchen sink. The cleanup prior to us moving left much to be desired. They didn’t adequately seal off unaffected room during the drywall phase and drywall dust got everywhere which they didn’t clean up. They used the cheapest materials even when told what the previous materials were. They were rude and defaults to blaming the home owner. They lie. They installed a toilet so they would be able to take a leak but left a roll of toilet paper that was packed away out so they rummaged through our stuff to find it. The quality of work putting the texture on the wall was inferior to the previous guys work. And yes like the previous post Jerry was the lead guy and neither Rodney nor Dave ever showed up to monitor progress except to get the money. I know there are other thing but I think you get the idea of there workmanship. Please find another company to do your work. You will regret it if you don’t.

Business Response

As a response to "Angry Homeowner" My name is Rodney Quick, the estimator for Better Built, I met with the homeowner and signed the job. I spoke to the homeowner 5 out of 7 days of each week of the repair. Met with him atleast once a week. He, at the pushing of his wife, called me day and night to ask for updates, changes and free services or atleast discounted ones. The project got further delayed due to the fact the homeowner requested major room changes, i.e. removal of brick fireplace, removal and closing of exterior door ( including matching brick on exterior) enlarging hall bath, modifying master bath and the addition of 2 linen closets. None of which was in the original scope of work and as listed above they wanted it done for little to no additional payment. They delayed the rebuild by 3 weeks in deciding what they wanted to do about the additional work. Homeowner stated the we were late in installing tarp....I was at his front door within an hour of his call to our company and after several hours of debate he signed contract and I contacted our tree service to remove the tree. In the intreim we removed as much of the canopy of the tree as we could and tarped over the trunk until the crane arrived the next day. Of course this was during the storm. Just a note the insurance company covered any and all items affect by water. Flooring (carpet) purchased by homeowner was bought as a close out item in a seconds in building store and was not enough material to complete the room it was intended for and thus the search for an alternate material. We painted the living 5 times at the customers request and yes the hardwood floor was installed after the room was sealed and painted with 2 coats, but the customer request and paid for 3 more coats to achive the look he wanted. I could continue to rebut each item or just cut to the chase and state the reason this homeowner was not happy, he wanted his electric panel upgraded to a 200 amp service and because it was not a code voilation the insurance company would not pay for it. So....he expected us to do it for free and as you can guess we did not. The bottom line is even though we did all of the extras requested at a minimal price the customer was mad that we would not lie to the insurance company and get them a panel upgrade ( a $1,500.00 upgrade) Just a note the homeowner signed a completion/satisfaction form which states that all work was completed to thier, you guessed it, SATISFACTION! On a warranty issue, customer call us 6 months after the job was complete and stated that there was a leak in the hall bath that resulted in the vinyl to lift. So I met with the customer and agreed there was water involved. I ask if his 2 small childern had splash waster out of tub onto floor? He replied with a resounding "NO". So we had a crew detach toilet...no leaking, check supply lines in wall...no leaking, removed the vinyl and discovered....ta da floor in front of tub was saturated due to water being splashed out of tub. He finally confessed and the expected us to fix it for free. Not a warranty issue, however my boss, Dave Smith did offer: Better Built would purchase the vinyl and the customer would pay for the installation. The customer declined the offer. Please judge for yourself. Have a great day!
