13 Excellent Restaurant Salads in New York City

Meat dishes may get a lot of attention in the press these days, but let's not forget that New York City restaurants are also home to some very fine plates of greens. Here, now, is a guide to 13 essential sit-down salads across the city. They range far beyond the usual lettuce and vinaigrette, but most are best eaten while the weather's still warm. So get on it:

Vongerichten's Inn at Pound Ridge Now Open Upstate

Jean-Georges Vongerichten opened The Inn at Pound Ridge, his rural Westchester restaurant, this week. It's housed in a building that dates back to 1883 and that was, for a long time, actually an inn. Now it's been refurbished into a two-story restaurant, with stone walls, wood floors, and working fireplaces.

The Inn falls into the growing family of ABC restaurants (Vongerichten tells Grub...

ABC Kitchen Restaurant Review

There are few places in the world where you can browse for a Persian rug or new furniture and then mull over possible purchases at an elegant restaurant in the same building. Welcome to ABC Kitchen, Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s restaurant on the ground floor of ABC Carpet & Home. In keeping with the style of the moment---that is, 2010---the food here has an organic and locally sourced focus. The...

Everyone talks a big game when it comes

Everyone talks a big game when it comes to seasonal cooking, but to my mind this place and Gramercy are the final word on the subject. I'm not completely in love with the room but the food is good in winter, glorious in spring, inspiring in summer, and very good in fall.

Jean-Georges Vongerichten's passion for contemporary American cuisine converges on a spectacularly attractive restaurant space in the famous ABC Carpet & Home store. A focus on local, sustainable and organic seasonal produce of the freshest order is integral to Jean-Georges' vision of a vibrant, ever-changing menu of regionally grown, organically focused cuisine that is rooted in cultivating a...

From the moment we walked in we felt special. We had a 9 year old, two 50 year olds and two 70 year olds and we all received special attention. They brought a beautiful hot chocolate for my son and anniversary cupcakes for my folks. The wine was excellent and each food course was a study in making the featured food taste great. The beets were ridiculous as was the ricotta ravioli. And the...

Delicious appetizers (roast carrots and tuna sashimi), but very underwhelming entrees (hake and sea bass). Service was so so. Slow and inattentive.

A home decor store is hardly the place you'd expect to find a superlative dining experience, but ABC Kitchen (located within ABC Carpet & Home) delivers. This venture between home decor giant and celebrated chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten paid off handsomely when it was voted "Best New Restaurant of 2011" by the James Beard Foundation. Flatiron District's Best Restaurants: Voted the best restaurant in the country by the James Beard Foundation, this impossibly elegant restaurant is attached to the flagship ABC Carpet & Home store -- and it shows. The restaurant is outfitted in sustainably created furniture, twinkling lighting and gorgeous antiques from the globe-trotting interiors store, and the rear dining room connects right...

Tips about this business (6) view all

Expensive, eclectic ABC Carpet & Home has three eateries, including this one, which comes courtesy of famed restaurateur Jean-Georges Vongerichten. Using organic and local ingredients, executive chef Dan Kluger (formerly of Tabla, Union Square Café, and Core) serves seasonal New American fare like kasha and bowtie pasta topped with homemade meatballs, roasted Chatham cod with citrus emulsion and rotating whole-wheat pizzas designed by consulting chef Jim Lahey (of the Sullivan Street Bakery). Naturally, the low-lit, largely white dining room has its own share of environmentally sound bona...

A glossy dining room, featuring blonde wood and airy ceilings, gives way to a menu of Puerto Rican cuisine.

Where to Sit

The juice bar and sweets counter has more of a lounge feel, with small tables and couches. It’s also close to the sales floor, as well as ABC’s other on-site restaurants, Pipa and Le Pain Quotidien.

What to Drink

An assortment of beers and wines are sourced from the New York area, and the cocktail menu is also local and organic. Try the vodka lemonade, made with thyme-infused syrup, or the blood orange bellini. House-made sodas include herbal root beer and basil-lime.
