rude management

I met some coworkers on friday after work to unwind for drinks and food. Shortly after I received my FIRST drink and my appetizer a woman came over and asked us, "When did we think we would be done." We had not even had an opportunity to order dinner. I have never been to any restaurant and been asked how soon I would be leaving. When we responded that we were not sure exactly when we would be finished the woman's attitude became rather rude. The experience only got worse when we asked to speak to a manager. (The woman that asked how soon we would be done stated she was a manager.) On the way out another manager told one of the people in our party that, "We were not the kind of people that he wanted in the establishment anyway." Everyone in our party was eating and drinking and would have spent a good deal of money if we had not been treated so rudely. So if the manager does not want paying customers that tip well then he has succeeded in keeping "our kind" from ever coming back to A.W. Shucks.

Tried no stars but it wouldn't submit

Where to begin? With the rudeness of the wait staff? The question as to when we would finish our meal and leave? The cheese platter that was slabs of cheddar with stale crackers? Never have I been treated so poorly. We were a large group that requested accommodations ahead of time, but shortly after we got there we were asked how long we planned on staying. Drinks were practically slung on the table by the waitress, and when we asked to speak with the manager she was rude and unhelpful. We decided we should go elsewhere, and mind you this was probably a $400 - $500 tab walking out the door. As we left, we stopped to speak to another manager who said to us "We don't want your kind here." My friend replied: "You mean professionals who behave well in public, spend money and tip well?" Never again will I walk in that place.

The worst

We three arrived at about 9:30 Friday night, 10/15/10. We ordered the tomato-crab "soup". When it arrived, all three of us looked at each other...it looked like the cook had dumped a can of diced tomatoes in the bowl and sprinkled sea legs (not real crabmeat) on top of it. It was tasteless and it's ridiculous the way they tried to pass it off as real cooking. Maybe some people aren't used to REAL flavor (we're from New Orleans) and for that, I'm sorry. The Caesar salad: spare me...the lettuce came to the table wilted...it was a ball of wilted lettuce with croutons on top. It looked like the ends of the lettuce that you'd normally discard. SHAME on you! Then, at the same time that my sister sent her salad back, my oyster "po' boy" came out. OH MY GOD. I guess people don't know what a po' boy is SUPPOSED to taste like. The bread was heavy...not light, like it's supposed to be. The oysters were canned, very soft and runny, they had no taste, and the breading was tough and saturated in oil. DISGUSTING! If you're going to cook New Orleans style food, please go to New Orleans and take a class! THIS WAS HORRIBLE! We did not send anything back after the Caesar Salad because we really did not want to become a nuisance, but I don't know HOW A.W. SHUCKS stays in business. I guess they don't know what REAL flavor and REAL cooking is...how sad. AND THEY ADD the TIP to your credit card charge, without saying anything to you, EVEN IF YOU TIP! They say the extra tip charge drops off in a day or two if you've left a tip, but THEY HAVE SOME NERVE! What if I didn't think the SERVICE was good? I can't decide what I'd like to tip, for MYSELF? You all need to take a trip to A REAL CITY. This is inconscionable--FOR BAD FOOD, AT THAT!!!! God help you poor Norfolk diners. DO NOT EAT AT THIS HOLE...IT'S TERRIBLE.

Good seafood, quirky atmosphere, fun

A W Shuck's was the first restaurant I ever ate at when I moved to the area. They impressed me the first time and have consistently met expectations on return visits. The menu selection is great -- there's something for everyone. I've had fried oysters here and really liked them. Raw or steamed oysters are available in dozens of varieties. The one time I got steamed oysters, I must not have chosen a good kind because they were small and smelly. Next time I'll ask the server for recommendations instead of doing guesswork on my own.

My favorite thing to order is the Chesapeake burger. It's a seasoned hamburger loaded with crab meat on top. It's HUGE! I always take some home.

The crab dip is also great. But can you really go wrong with crab, cream cheese and toasted bread? :)

Consistently great food. It is my go to spot in Norfolk. Fresh oysters, great beers, and great staff. We've been going there for over 13 years and will continue to.

During my recent tour of Norfolk my wife and I stopped at A.W. Shucks. We actually passed by it as we were on our way to Bold Mariner Brewing (or was it Smartmouth? both are close, as well as Benchtop - wait! It was Coelacanth, even closer!), but she thought we needed a snack so we turned around.
It was late afternoon/early evening and there were plenty of parking spaces to be had. Inside it...

We went to A.W. Shucks in the basis of the reviews and the online menu. The restaurant was hard to find, since it is located to the back of the Ghent Market Shoppes off 22nd street. Most visible locator at night is the Plaza del Sol Mexican restaurant on the street corner entrance. The online menu turned out to NOT...

Great selection of seafood

I have never been disappointed when I come to this restaurant. Great seafood. Small place and most tables only seat four people. Always packed with people, so that speaks volumes on the food. Just a really good place for food and beer, wine and cocktails.

Fish, Mac and cheese, jambalaya, wow... everything is Gggreat! This local dive is a fun spot that left my friends and me satisfied. The chefs are very creative and talented. Great service, too.
